There must not be any swell currently if this is the topic of the day  ::)
It's small in SoCal, but I had a great surf this morning.  Put away the 7'4 and pulled out my 10'6.  Had a blast!

We had some nice almost chest high waves yesterday morning but yeah, typical summer doldrums for the most part.

Watching the cams and hoping for surf is not surfing.

hahaha! You've got that right!

No swell and marginal wind here. Waiting for Hurricane Guillermo to weaken and get here. Going Stir-crazy.

I'm pretty sure typing is not surfing.

voilà, stand up surfing. Bask in its glory. Notice the elbows, 2-3" above the table top, perfect form and technique. Looking at the screen, an apparent failure of execution. For some reason, I find it forgivable.

Hah hah, good point!

A stupid notion.  As if the most important part of surfing is popping up. Last time I checked no one gives a damn how good you are at that. Wow, that Kelly Slater is really good at getting to his feet.

I still have a hard time saying I am "surfing" when I am stand up surfing. I agree the pop up becomes pretty natural, as natural as getting up out of a chair, but catching the wave takes more skill/effort. Which is why I typically say "paddle surfing", because the paddle makes the act of catching the wave much easier.

I wonder how many of you who say stand up surfing is surfing, still do or have ever surfed (prone)? It is funny but to me the act of how you handle the board when you are not riding a wave is where I feel that (prone) surfers have earned the title. I also hate saying prone surfing, because you are standing after you catch the wave so what does that even mean?

When someone tells me they are going surfing, I would assume they mean without the paddle.

After all of the above, I don't care what you call any of it. You can ride a $10 foam boogie board in 3" shore break in a lake and call yourself a surfer for all I care. I just wouldn't call myself one.

I love paddle surfing and surfing. Taking my longboard out for a surf first thing tomorrow!
Make paddleboarding great again!

You don't "earn" the "title" surfer.... you just surf.
It's not a secret club ;)

When people make a comment about SUP (pretty rare these days) I say "The fun starts after you stand up."

And thats that,

A unknown-to-me troll on Facebook -- a "friend" of a friend of mine -- informed me that I am not surfing, but instead am, and I quote, "stabbing at waves with my crutch." Funny ... it sure feels like surfing, the most surfing fun I've had in in 40-plus years of surfing, to me.

I just say I'm surfing because I don't do the other anymore and I refer to prone surfing as "regular surfing."  I still have a couple relatives that ask: "Oh, do you mean real surfing or paddle surfing?" >:(

I still have a hard time saying I am "surfing" when I am stand up surfing.

I started "regular" surfing when I was 13 and stopped after I discovered standup a couple years ago.

I wonder how many of you who say stand up surfing is surfing, still do or have ever surfed (prone)?

I don't like saying "prone surfing" either for the exact same reason you said. Plus, what if you paddle your surfboard on your knees like I used to do when I was a grom? Is that supposed to be called "knee surfing"? Nope, can't call it that cuz there is kneeboarding (you know, half men, har har).

I also hate saying prone surfing, because you are standing after you catch the wave so what does that even mean?

I think "paddle surfing" is a good way to describe what we do.

If you prone paddle your SUP, you wouldn't call it
"Stand Up Paddle Prone Surfing" - you'd just call it surfing (or prone surfing)
- same board but now without the paddle.

I still like "Stand Up Paddle Surfing" - cause you start standing up,
you are using a paddle and you are Surfing!

Cowabunga!
Are SUP Surfers allowed to use that word? lol
