I don't know how a fish that big hanging off the side of the board isn't flipping it over..
unless he has the opposite rail hooked under the chime of the boat..Hmmm...

I've seen novelty videos like this before where the fish are chummed and even hooked on a boat, then the rod is transferred to a guy on a SUP for the token video shots.  I very much doubt he could have hooked and brought to the surface a fish as strong as that on any SUP.  Groupers will go for structure immediately upon being hooked, and the only way to get enough leverage to keep them from doing that is being firmly anchored (ie, not getting dragged around by a fleeing fish) with a very stout rod and very tight drag.  Once the fish is turned and kept from getting into structure, they are much easier to deal with.  I call BS.

Not sure about the first part, but you must have never eaten grouper. I would practice sustainable fish husbandry--filet and release. Big grouper taste just as good as little grouper. There's a lot less talk of catch and release with the way I used to get them--spear through the eye socket.

Raf, it's entirely possible that you are right, and equally likely that you are wrong. Take a look at his gear in the video--not heavy stuff. SUP fishing is a big deal, certainly in the Northwest and people are catching very big fish from them. It almost feels like cheating to me. I've had a few crazy days catching and releasing Coho and Steelhead, with an occasional Chinook (and an occasional keeper toward the end of the day). I have friends who run crab pots with their SUPs, it's the most effective way to do it for a small number of traps.

Goliath groupers (also called Jewfish) are amazing animals. They were protected for a long time because they were overfished. I too am glad that fish got released, but I have to say grouper is DELICIOUS! Probably my favorite meal ever is blackened grouper. Oh my God, I'm salivating just thinking about it.

That video is a joke. Only reason that fish was landed is because there was a boat there.

There's a good vid online of a guy hooking up on a mid sized sailfish from a sup. Walks the dog to fight it....very cool. This one looks like BS to me too though.
