Speed and Distance
« on: July 28, 2015, 04:59:51 PM »
Recently looked at the ad for the Makai SUP speed/distance meter which looks like a real nice device, but the $339 price was a bit much for an amateur like myself. An alternative is the Garmin Forerunner 10 which costs under $100 and while wrist mounted has a good size display for your speed and distance. It is simple to use and seems to be accurate as one would expect for a GPS based device. Put on at the right position and it is easy to read on your lower paddle wrist. It is also good for hiking/running, etc. For some folks it may be a good "Plan B".

If you want Doppler precision you can get a Canmore GT-102+ for $50.
You can download the Doppler speed and track and use GPS Replay to analyze.
1) very small
2) not waterproof so need a small pouch
I just got a SpeedPuck to complement (the price has been slightly dropping here in Canada) as I wanted an immediate feed-back on speed to try to improve technique.
The price of the Makai plus shipping plus backorder was too much for our loonie and about 40% more than the Makai when everything was said and done.

Cheers,

Luc

@LeeBee & Luc,

The Makai is specifically designed for Standup Paddling. As a result of the Makai's SUP specificity, it is produced in significantly smaller batches than the Forerunner or GT-102. This results in a higher price.

The Makai has a large format LCD with numbers almost one inch tall. The lens is anti-reflective and anti-glare. The screen is angled so it can be viewed easily from a standing position and it is a fixed angle so a wave over the board will not move the face of the Makai and make the numbers impossible to read. The Makai was designed from the board up and its extremely low-profile mounting plate is very secure. The design of the Makai is very hydrodynamic so it sheds the water rather than the water trying to wash the device off the board.

If you're interested in a super easy to use, SUP specific GPS, from a company passionate about helping people get more enjoyment out of their time on the water, check out the Makai: www.velocitek.com/makai

Best,

Charles
