I knew it was sinking
« on: July 27, 2015, 07:35:15 AM »
Only question is, was it waterlogged or is it just my fat ass.

Nice to know I wasn't just crazy. I didn't think it was all that heavy at the end. Might have been adrenalin. Here's the before:

Is this just a coincidence after the vacuum cleaner debate?

Looks like you get to try out respective methods now.

Knowing you, you're sinking that rail for the pic.  Only one way to know for sure.

I wish we had a boardlady equivalent nearby. I'd love to get the board really restored. I think its beyond my skills to do it justice.

Yeah, it was tipped some, but she was headed down. Look at the tail.

It's not beyond your capabilities to restore it, you do careful work. The grunt work that no one would want to do is stripping off all the glass. Once you get that done and have the wood clean it's just paint and glassing. You can have any good glasser do that part, or just do it yourself. No magic in it, like everything else, it's just time and the nerve to jump in.

The things is that Eva wouldn't do the glass. At least not as an overlay. She would have repaired the veneer and gone for as close to original as possible. The board has an additional 6oz glass skin as part of the snap repair. Ideally I'd like to get rid of that.

I'd strip ALL the glass off. It's toast. I'm doing that with my old F18. Leave the veneer in place, it probably has one layer of glass under it and two on top. sand the top ones off, sand the snap repair off. Doesn't take as long as you'd think. Sand the rails and anything without veneer on it down to EPS. I'd strengthen the snap with carbon, then paint it white, and glass over it.

Either that or clean it up and make a wall hanger out of it. I'm sure it's leaking around the finbox and in all those cracks on the bottom. It probably lightened up before I carried it because the water ran back out.

I hate the thought of retiring it but maybe that's the thing to do. Maybe I can find one of these in the tuffskin for cheap. I do love this board for all it does.

I sure wouldn't retire it, too much history. The current trend in car restoration is minimalism, to make the car drivable and useful but retain the patina. A reaction to the over-restored cars that are so perfect that no one drives them. Maybe that's your course of action.

I've got a C4 Beach Boy 10'6 that soaks up water like a sponge, and I've been thinking of just chopping a foot or two off to make a tomo style board out of it. Or I could start hunting down the leaks and fixing them, but some are the fixtures for the bungees in the front and a few more fixtures under the deck pad. Been leaving puddles under my car after even short paddles.
