I ride a road bike. Seen many cyclists taken out by cars, both drunk and sober. In recent memory three or four have been killed by cars on the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami. I myself have been intentionally buzzed, yelled at, and had things thrown at by drivers trying to teach me that I should be on the sidewalk. Got tired of carrying around a copy of the Florida Statutes. Have plenty of scars, 5 broken ribs and a punctured lung due to people acting out on the attitudes expressed here. FYI -- many of the stupid things cyclists do they do in an effort to avoid cars or to ensure that they're seen by the cars -- i.e., "presentation". Safer to risk inconveniencing a car than being taken out by one.

PS. McQueen is the King of cool. Big fan of Roger De Coster too.

Thank you.  I don't have a road bike right now but a 7 speed Electra beach cruiser but I plan to upgrade to a road bike.  Here in San Diego we've had two separate incidents of a cyclist killed (IN the bike lane) by a distracted driver.  One of the cyclists was the CFO or Rady Children's hospital.

Wow, those are cool! Didn't know anything like that existed. I want one! I know of a couple farming communities in So Cal where all the farmers get around their land on really old Honda Trail 90's because they are so bulletproof reliable.

Not to veer too far off subject, but a lot of companies are building ultralight and retro bikes based on licensed or reengineered versions of the old Honda 90 motor.

I'd love to ride a bike on Maui, but I consider it tantamount to suicide. I sometimes ride on the southside, used to do it to shuttle myself for SS downwinders, but I ride almost exclusively on the sidewalk. Between the distracted tourists driving in vacation mode (traffic laws don't apply) and the locals texting, it's incredibly hazardous. That's why I laugh at the shark danger. What danger? They're pussycats compared to being hit by two tons of steel doing 40MPH.

Here in Hood River it's slightly more sane, but only slightly. A distracted driver killed Ellen Dittebrandt, one of our senior firefighters and a superb local artist last year, swerving deep into the breakdown lane to smash a fine person to bits. The wonderful giant triptych on the back wall at Celilo was one of her pieces. The official cause was listed as driver fatigue, but the police suspected but couldn't prove the driver was distracted--one of them told me they believe he was looking at his cell phone to make a call. Plenty of tourists doing insane stuff, but at least there aren't any whales for them to look at while they're speeding twenty MPH over the speed limit.

Gary was way cool. I ran into him at Del Mar a few years before he passed away. I know he didn't remember me, but he pretended to. I was one of a million local racers who filled out the grid for a few of the races he participated in, mostly at Ascot, but once in Maryland too, though I forget the name of the track. Something like Edgewood. I ripped my shoulder apart the first time at that track (different race), you think I'd remember the name.

I was very surprised to hear that he died, he looked so healthy when I saw him, like a slightly chunkier fifty-year old version of the young guy I knew. I think he said he was 68 when I saw him last. That kind of freaks me out. He looked a lot better than I do.

I use to ride and race road/mountain/cyclocross. I have since sold most of my road bikes and cyclocross bikes. Someone mentioned on this forum the N+1 rule. That applied to my bike collection. Had a commuter bike, rain bike, race bike, backup race bike, multiple set of wheels ranging from deep dish carbon to daily trainers and so on. I gave up riding a few years ago. More and more incidents of fatalities and bike/car accidents pop up everyday. I've seen fellow racers get run off the road (during a race) and been to several funerals of fellow cyclists who left behind young families. I see people constantly texting on their phone (illegal in my state) and have no desire to be on the same roads with these drivers on a bike even though I live in a relatively rural area.
I'd rather take my chances with shark attacks and crowded lineups than on the road with my bike.

Is it cool? Its all seen in different lights. From reading books, my 10yo daughter can tell me every character, planet and android in all of Star Wars and then tell me how to build a whole world in Mind Craft. I think that's pretty cool.

Avid cyclist, here. Not the spandex, titanium racer, viagra type of dork, but more the 26 mile commute to work, steel touring bike type of dork.

Is it cool? No.

Is SUP cool?

Nope.Generally speaking, there's nothing cool about the demographic that can afford this sport. It's even worse  when we think we're cool.

I think Standup is the coolest thing to happen to surfing since the invention of the shortboard in the seventies.

Standup is also the coolest thing to happen to flatwater since kayaks became popular in the seventies.

Paddleboarding is one of the most affordable activities around.

The problem with new things is that every kook and dork wants to try it which gives it a bad reputation with the traditional ways of thinking. Once the fad is over, it will be accepted as a cool way to surf.

It will die off a bit in a few years as the newness fades. It takes about ten years for a fad to die and find its place.

Wow. It never entered my mind that we're all a bunch of wealthy snobs just because we can afford paddleboards of all things.

Brother, I love kayaking. As a matter of fact , I just acquired my dream boat last month.

Unfortunately though, kayaking... also not cool.
