Montauk - 14' downwind boards in the surf
« on: July 17, 2015, 06:33:35 AM »
We had planned a 15mile / 24km run from Montauk down the Oceanside with a forecasted Easterly wind on our 14' downwind boards, but when we got out, we realized the wind was from the south and it would have been a long, hard one-sided paddle. There was however some good sized swell rolling in from the south, so I was persuaded by my local paddling partner to instead catch some waves on our 14 footers. I've SUS'ed a few times but not coming from a surf background I find waves that break crashing on rocky shores a little intimidating. The wind being onshore there was no-one else out, so it seemed safe enough on our huge boards, and so we went for it. I have to say it was a lot of fun.

I love surfing my 14...especially good for small but long waves.

I surf my SIC14V2 whenever things are to small and mushy for my 9.1, which is often the case this summer in South Florida. Moved the fin all the way forward and have to step way back to get it to turn, but it is a way to have fun when there's no other action in the water.

It was a lot easier than I thought, though like all things, it is all about timing timing timing (to avoid too much energy being spent missing waves). There was a couple of times I had to bail as the rocks came up faster than I thought which got the heart pounding.. I was able to go down the line, but that was it..

I wouldn't expect much more than going down the line...I can turn it but they're long curves.

Bob, you're right there... but going down the line and keeping right (off the rocks) was good enough for me! One final pic which gives a better idea of the scale of the swell coming through. I'll put a short vid together of this next week.

Sadly my time in L.I. is coming to an end, but with a downwind, time in the surf, a couple of long distance journeys and some tidal and recreational paddling, it's great to see this part of the Northeast has a lot to offer the SUP paddler! I'll be back... and one of these years I'm planning to paddle the CCBC and the Great Peconic Race (round Shelter Island).

Wow, is that ditch plains?  Looks like it, one of the best breaks on LI.
This is where I surfed in the 70's on surf trips from long beach.
Lots of cool waters for stand up out there!

... not Ditch Plains, but not far away from there.. as you say some great places for SUP along the coast there.

Bob. I'm looking forward to the time I can make it to CCBC. Maybe a year or two away but I will do it. In the meantime, here is the vid of this session out in Montauk. Not that impressive from those who SUS a lot but I hope it coveys the wonders of being out on the ocean in a beautiful part of the NE. You'll also see what I mean about being able to go down the line and that's about it.

Such a blast taking off on unbroken swells and riding them all the way in. I'm actually considering adding some thrusters to my 14 when I do the makeover. Not that I think it will change how well it turns much, never going to throw it around.

It looked like you were having a great time..... very nice set-up with the waves running along the coast.... not into it.

Thanks for the video  :)

Thanks guys. It was a blast and some of my HK buddies think there is a similar place in Hong Kong so we're going to check it out. When there is no wind this is a lot of fun.
