How to shorter a Werner Fiji paddle?
« on: July 05, 2015, 07:02:13 PM »
I'd like to shorten my Werner Fiji paddle to resize it for my wife.  I took a hair drying to it and got it pretty hot but still couldn't twist the handle off.  Any other suggestions to get it to come off?    If I can't get it to come off, where could I pick up a replacement Werner handle?
Also, when I cut it, can I use a mitre saw or will that shatter it?

Any Werner dealer should be able to fix you up with a handle, including online dealers.  Werner doesn't sell direct to customers but you might call them they might just send you a handle for free.  Their customer service is top motch.  You can use a fine tooth chop saw, just tape the area to be cut with masking tape first.

It's stuck together with epoxy like most other paddles so you need to have some hacksaw skills.  If you want a heat & shorten or change out a component get a KeNalu.

Blow dryer probably not hot enough, a heat gun on a low setting would be a better option.  The handle extends into the shaft for 2" so that is where you want to slowly apply the heat, then slowly pull the handle straight out - don't twist - once the epoxy melts.  However, not guaranteed & it's a tricky operation since the melting point on the ABS plastic handle is lower than the paddle shaft.

If you end up melting it, no biggie.  You can cut the shaft 2" down or more & get a new handle from a Werner dealer.

I got the paddles from REI and didn't see werner handles on their website but maybe I can order them. I'll contact Werner to get the info
