Vests
« on: July 01, 2015, 10:20:49 AM »
I'm looking ahead to fall/winter surf and I'm thinking about getting a vest. Even on my good days I'm more likely to wipeout than most so I'm thinking it might be good to have a one for bigger days. My daughter bought me an Oniell for fathers day but what they call 2xl doesn't fit. Any ideas for a 3xl from someone or a brand whose sizes run bigger?

Which O'Neil did you try? Was it zippered or pullover?

The pullovers will have some stretch and might fit a wider range of size.

I wear the Techno Comp.

That's a good question.  They fit a size or two smaller than their nominal designation, but they do stretch out a little with use. I haven't seen any larger than XXL (which is probably more like XL or X plus a bit).  They don't seem to make them for the larger guys that much. I certainly wouldn't want one unduly compressing my chest vs. protecting with padding.

Hey Bob, O'Neil definitely seems to run tight as the Large I have (Techno Vest) fits very snug.

I found the following brand may make 3xl: NPX Immortal Flotation Vest
Infinity RNB 8'2
Ron House 9'7
Ron House 10'7
Infinity New Deal 10'
Custom Infinity New Deal 10'
VEC 11'
Focus Bluefin 14'

I have a pullover O'Neill Gooru, size Large, at 175lbs and 5'10".  A friend I water ski with is 225 and 6'1" and wears an XXL, but it was hard to find that size in stock. Love the Gooru though.  Great flexibility, and range of motion is not restricted at all.

I have a Patagnia R1 Big Wave Vest that I like a lot.   Check out the reviews and all at http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/mens-r1-padded-big-wave-vest?p=88200-0

As previously mentioned elsewhere, they're a bit pricey.  I have a XL which is a bit snug (6'1" at 198lbs)....

I liked my Dakine Surface Vest, but it got stolen.  Shifted to O'Neill, which is nice pullover, but is now worn with foam popping out.

The Patagonia stuff tends to be extremely well made, get what you pay for, but I think I might go back to the Dakine Surface in XXL.

It was the zippered Assault which was the wrong vest anyway but checking their site they do make a couple that are 3xl,  but even the 3xl Outlaw comp vest only fits up to 50.5" chest. I'm 52". Of course the best solution would be to lose about 50 lbs.... :P. Story of my life, clothes shopping always sucks and I can't ride on a lot of amusement park rides that have the restraints come down over the shoulders/chest.

I don't mind paying $$$ for safety equipment. I'll have to start looking at the sizing charts of the manufacturers.

Shit...Patagonias sizing is even worse...3xl is 48 1/2". Even if I was skinny that wouldn't fit.

Double shit....I may be S.O.L., can't find anything that will fit my current configuration. Further incentive to shed some pounds though based on what I'm seeing it may not matter.

Bob is it possible to get a couple vests and have a tailor cut them up and then custom fit one together? A good seamstress/tailor could probably pull it off, it might be a little more work and $$ but then you'd have a solid vest fitting perfect for you.

That's not a bad idea. My sister could actually do it I'm sure. I'll have to look into that.

I use the O'Neil Gooru in xxlarge for large surf.  It's a pretty tight fit.  I'm 6'4" 225.  Definitely try one on first before you purchase.

You really want the vest to fit well (especially in challenging conditions) and not be too tight or restrictive.

I think they work great.  The Gooru pulls me to the top quick and adds to my confidence in large surf.

You'll probably have to shop for a vest like you would for a new sup…best to try before you buy.

Stoney, The O'neill Hammer 3XL will do it. I'm 240 and 6'7. I've had mine for 5 years or and I like it. It should fit you perfect. I'll wear it under my rash guard when temps drop a little.

What sized chest do you have TD? I think if I was 6'7" and 240 it might fit. Genetics gave me a broad back, I was born with big lats too. I've always had a hard time finding things that fit because of it. Biggest pain seems to be finding some to try on. Nobody seems to even carry the 3xls and the Oneill site even says they need to be ordered online. I might have to just order a few and send back whatever doesn't fit.

Is the hammer an impact vest? I don't see it listed on the site. I'm looking for a little bit of impact protection and float too. I have a regular vest that fits OK.

The Hammer is not an impact vest. My chest is a 46. I bought mine off the rack, but they show it in stock online here. http://www.wetsuitwearhouse.com/page/WW/4466#.VZV8JPlVhBc
The impact vests tend to be tight. Mine is a Comp/ wake boarding vest. http://www.overtons.com/Watersports/Wakeboarding-Accessories/Wakeboard-Vests/Mens-Wakeboard-Vests#filters?do=json&i=1&nav=1&q1=600&q2=600D&q3=600D10&q4=600D10A&q5=Wakeboard+Vests&q6=Wakeboarding+Accessories&q7=Watersports&q8=3XL~7E20(52-56)|2XL~7E20(48-52)|2XL~7E20(46~7E20-~7E2049)|2XL~7E20(44~7E20-~7E2048)&rank=rank2&x1=cat1&x2=cat2&x3=cat3&x4=cat4&x5=t3&x6=t2&x7=t1&x8=CHEST_SIZE__INCHES_&cat_depth=3&matched_cat=600D10&is_refined=1&ckey=rw3L5zxCYRDhEp3S+O8Frw
