WindSUP for Sailboat
« on: June 29, 2015, 01:54:45 PM »
Hey yall, been cruising through the forums here and thought I'd ask for some specific advise. Home is a little sailboat which I'm taking down to the islands this fall and Im the market for an inflatable WindSUP. I've been researching Starboard, Naish, JP, etc and am leaning toward a Starboard. This will be a big investment onboard, so I'm willing to splurge for whatever would be best.

I'm inexperienced but young/athletic. Weight 80kgs and the dog is 35kgs. So the Naish Crossover, awesome though it looks, is kinda off the list.

http://star-board-sup.com/2015/overview-windsup/
http://jp-australia.com/2015/sup/products/inflatable-boards/cruisair/

I know there are compromises in choosing a SUP for touring and also something that would be OK to windsurf, but here's what I'm hoping to get from the little dude (in order of importance):
-good paddler for trekking with the dog in ocean swells
-good upwind performance
-sailing speed in light to medium winds (as versatile a sail plan as possible)
-stability and volume for carrying supplies in calm anchorages
-something fun for visiting crew to play around with

Right now, the WindSUP Inflatable 12' x 33" Deluxe seems like a pretty good compromise for what I'm hoping to do with it, but I'd be grateful for feedback. I know I'm asking for a lot. Not expecting it to excel in any one area, although trekkability with the dog is important.

Also, I plan on demoing some boards when I get down to South Florida, but where I'm at currently in SC that's not possible.

Many thanks for your sage advice!!

Well whodang and a couple dammits, I just came across this guy: http://www.naishsurfing.com/product/crossover-air-120/

So right now, if I were to assume, my two best options are the Naish 12' x 34" crossover or the starboard 12' x 33" deluxe.

The first board you linked to (Naish 11') is only 30" wide... I think you'll want more stability for trekking around w/ a 35kg dog.  32" or 34" would be much better...

The Starboard  goes w/ a fully retractable dagger assembly.  Too much weight/complexity, IMO...
(Interesting to see that SB has a 40" iwindSUP.  Why not 50"??  ???)

The Naish 12' and the JP CruisAir wind is what I'd go with..  The Naish centerfin is that proprietary 'clip retainer' style, though.  Whereas I believe JP uses a standard finbox?  Would allow you to use standard fins, different lengths/styles depending on conditions you're sailing in.

Zoner JimK is a JP dealer.  Shoot him a msg and see what he can do for you on the JP...  Use the money you save to buy a nice paddle and windSUP rig.   ;)

Thanks for the advise. The more I look into it, the more an all arounder seems like it might be a more practical option, especially if the added width is going to make moving with the dog a lot easier. And the shorter stouter boards certainly look more fun to windsurf. How much more difficult would it be to make a long-distance trek in something like the JP allaroundair ws 10.2 x 34"? Wouldn't the 11.4 x 30" cruisair be similar to the Naish 11' crossover in terms of stability?

Hey laika,

Another option you could throw into the ring is the Red Paddle Co 10'8" Ride Windsurfer. 34" wide and a nice stable platform for carrying gear/dogs. Bit shorter than what you were first looking at but now considering, it pumps to 25 PSI and comes with a good quality wheeled bag and the dual chamber Titan Pump.

Of the ones you've already shortlisted, I'd probably lean toward the Starboard 12' but the center board does complicate things. How much time will you we sailing it compared to paddling it? The Naish is a simpler board but has a suggested max pressure of only 14 PSI. Starboard is 18 and Red is 25. Would make a big difference in loading it up with gear and the pressures of sailing it.

JP 11'4 and Naish 11 would be very similar. I think a bit narrow for what you plant to do.

You might look at this one.
I still haven't got a sail rig for it but it does have an attachment and I REALLY like the board for paddling.
I went with the 12 footer.
Get with JimK on it as well.

The Red Paddle 10.8 and the Fanatic 12 both look like really good boards, but I notice they don't have any centralized fin attachments for upwind sailing performance? I'd like to think I'd be sailing more, but as a sailor I know how that often goes..a lot of motoring (paddling) if you want to actually get somewhere.

I do like the design of the Red Paddle otherwise, even if it is a bit shorter. I've crossed the Naish 12' off the list because of the 14psi max, but otherwise that would probably be the one. They seem to have a great reputation both for sailing performance and paddling. Is it their quest to keep the board as light as possible which has made them have to give up some rigidity in the design?

The Starboard 12' is still up there but I've heard a lot of negativity here and elsewhere about the daggerboard design. I see it's retractable, but is the reason it's less desireable for paddling because even when retracted the design creates more drag? More of PITA the assemble? I suppose I could go with the thinner Zen version, but unsure if the 4.75 thickness and 18psi would be too flimsy for me.

Lot of options! Always a compromise..

Thanks again

Laika:

I agree that iWindSUPs need a center fin.  I have a few RedPaddle boards...they're great, but if theirs doesn't have a center finbox, then I'd rule it out.

The Starboard dagger assembly looks like the same one I had in a Starboard GO (windsurf).  As I recall, the assembly was about 6lbs.  Seems like a lot of deadweight on an iSUP.  Are you a decent boardsailor?  Only you can decide whether you need the security of a full dagger, vs. a centerfin only.

I forgot about the Fanatic..  the 12'0 x 34" + mast insert would be a great option.
I have an RRD 10'4x34" + mast insert.  The 34" width is great for uphauling and futzing w/ a sail.  You almost never fall off.  ;D
12'0" would be good length for paddler/sailor + big dog.

If you're looking at a board w/o a centerfin option, you can always add one.  That's what I did.
iSUP finbox from airsup.com.  iSUP PVC material and glue from NRS.com.  Works like a charm.

I'm a decent wakeboarder, so I probably have the blind instincts. But I'm hoping to pick up the basics pretty fast. And I can throw up a sail and point the nose in a good general direction.

Starboard has two lines of 2015 iWindSUPs, the "Zen" and "Deluxe". The Zen is thinner at 4.75" but does away with the daggerboard in favor of a centerfin. It seems this line of boards are their "paddleboard centric" models while the 6" deluxe w/ daggerboard are more windsurf centric.

I'd like something that about 50/50. But as I'd also like to use this as a dinghy, it seems smart to cover the the paddleboard bases. So long as the board has what it needs to sail upwind decently well I think I'd be happy.

I'm still not sure, but in the end it might be the Starboard 12' x 33" Zen model. I'd be sacrificing a bit of rigidity in not going with the thicker deluxe version, but it seems like a quality board to the point where this wouldn't matter all that much. Other than the Naish 12' Crossover which would seem to have even less rigidity @ 14psi, the shape of the 12' x 33" Zen seems perfect for what I'm looking for. Glide but with good stability and carrying capacity.
