I use a green waterproof Timex that I got from Goodwill for $4. My backup is a blue waterproof from GW at $3.  People are always asking me the time out there.

I doubt I would keep track of all the info in a GPS watch after the first novelty.

When someone asks me what time it is, I always tell them about 1/2 an hour later. They usually say they're now late and leave the lineup right away.

Got the watch. Strapped it on and became obsessed.  I had seen my wife's friends get those things that count yor steps when you walk.  I had seen them finish a walk, look down and realize they were a few hundred short and take off down the block. I'm the same with my wave count now.  Really crappy surf, one wave session.  Really good surf, thirty waves.  Small surf, forty eight waves.  And the distance is amazing five to eight miles paddling/riding in a session.  So in 55 days surfing this summer, 1,806 waves, 315 miles paddled/surfed.  The riding works out to about 20% of that.  No wave hog comments please, I'm often out alone.

I might need the watch.  I have been counting waves in my head since Oct. 18, 2012.  6,679 waves caught, 12.7 waves per hour.  (Lifetime estimate 12,500 from my first SUS day on Nov 13th, 2009).

Your rate is incredibly high for just one summer (I will not comment further. . .  just green with envy).  So that people don't get snippy I also track a "Solo Rate" which is when I am 100% alone in the water.  I have historically measured ~ 50%.

The counting keeps my mind active, and the database helps keeps my professional skills fresh.

The 3rd graph shows what I have found with regards to Rate/Hr.  The smaller the waves, the higher the rate.  I have found Rate / Hr = 19 - 1 X Wave Height (in Feet).

Thinking about the Trace for about half the $$

http://www.traceup.com

Anybody try both that can provide comparisons?  I want to track wave distance & speed.

I have not seen nor tried the TRACE.  The watch does give you a readout or every wave ridden with speed and distance.  Also a total of distance ridden and paddled in a session.  Plus a Google Earth photo of the spot you surfed with the track of your waves overlaid.

I use It almost daily, sometimes its depressing on how little waves you get. In your mind you think you caught 20-30 and you only caught 15.  It works kiting also. Pretty fun toy. Oh and chicks dig it.

Supstoked does it work (track distance and speed) for flatwater if your not in one of the surf breaks that the watch connects to for tides, etc? What about surf spots that are not listed in the menu ?? Such as secret spots?
