28" is plenty of width, especially at that length.

Well I was down at the jersey shore last weekend but spent all my time visiting with old college buddies Nd no time finding a board of paddling. That being said, I'm still really interested in starting this sport. If anyone knows of a good deal within an hour or so of Harrisburg PA let me know. Trying to get a good flat water board, leash and paddle for under $1000 (more like $700-$800 if that's possible).

Yeah....28 should be plenty at that length. Especially at your size and weight with decent balance. I think your looking at the right idea. A 14 will be a much better flatwater lake board, you can always rent for the infrequent ocean visits.....or maybe that's the second board..... ;). You may have a problem finding a 14 with a paddle at that price though. Maybe easier with a 12-6....not sure.

So it's only been a few days but I must admit that I'm a bit frustrate.  Here are some of the options I came up with.  Unfortunately, only one of them (a long shot) is the in the 14' category.

1) I called a local place around me that rents BICs and he would sell me an Ace Wing for $1050 plus tax.  No paddle or leash included.

2) Found the Isle Phantom on line that comes with a paddle and free shipping for $845.  Not sure if this board is a real piece of garbage or if its decent.  It was a little wider than I was expecting at 31" but then again this will be my first board.  http://www.islesurfboards.com/isle-phantom-touring-stand-up-paddle-12-6.aspx

3)  Found this JM Latitude board on Naish's outlet site.  $999 plus $75 for shipping.  Looks like a really nice board (for the same price would rather have this than the Ace Wing I would think.  It's only a 12-6 but not sure if thats fine for me (6', 190lbs).  http://www.surftech.com/sup/126-jm-paddleboards-latitude

4) Next is a 14' NSP touring I found on Distressed Mullet website classified. Board is about a 2hr drive from me which is no big deal.   I like $700 but don't want to get the wrong board.  http://distressedmullet.com/classifieds/standup-paddle-board/nsp-14-touring-beginner-race-board/

5) Last one is a Bark Dominator (the wood/tan colored one).  It's over in Jersey.  The guy is asking $1300.  I emailed him today offering $1000 to see.  Its a 14'.  That one is unlikely to work out though.

Thought's anyone?  Should I hold out for a 14'?  Might even consider shaping my own if I can get a decent template for shape3d.

No problem, get back in your car and drive back. This forum is a great place for helping to narrow down choices and steer you in the right direction, but nothing anyone says is going to be as valuable as you stepping onto and paddling a board.

So it's only been a few days but I must admit that I'm a bit frustrate.  Here are some of the options I came up with.  Unfortunately, only one of them (a long shot) is the in the 14' category.

Is he offering to sell you a "new" or "rental" board?

I am automatically distrustful of used listings that use stock photos and list the board condition as "1 out of 10".  :o

p.s. This is the button for links: . It looks like you're using the 'ftp' button.

The BIC was new I believe.  At that price though, I could get the JM latitude which appears to be a lighter, better board.

Yeah, really don't see 14' around here.  If I want to enter in a race in the future, am I going to need a 14'?

Anyone have any info on the Phantom from Isle.  For $850 with a paddle it seems like a really good deal.  I figure that option would be at least $300-$400 cheaper than anything else depending on what paddle I bought.

Also, will a 12-6 float me OK?  I know it won't be as fast as the 14 but I may not have an option.

I was really hoping someone would add to your question here on the Isle Phantom touring board.  I was looking at that one also for lakes and slow rivers in Inidana / Michigan for an old fat guy (6'5" - 260 lbs - 46) and use by my kids!  Looks nice, not a bad price, Not going to ocean, all my water is flat inland lakes.  NOTHING performance orientated about me..... just ask my wife....!

Hard to find information about the Isle epoxy boards.  Only a few comments on here and most are pretty old.

Anyone help?

Thanks, Brian
