*SUP NEW Invention - Mounting Advice*
« on: June 11, 2015, 01:48:13 PM »
Hi Guys and Girls,

I greatly appreciate some insight. I am currently developing an aftermarket accessory for paddle boards but am struggling to figure out what the best mounting solution is. The product I am developing has a mounting bracket similar to a GoPro but now I need to determine the best way to mount to customers SUP's.

 Please let me know your preferred mounting option - or any mounting tip/tricks you can recommend.

The possible options are:

- Epoxy glue fixing mount to the board permanently.
- An adhesive pad (similar to GoPro) to temporarily fix in place;
- Elastic Strops or Straps;

Last question would you be deterred having to mount the bracket to your product permanently (i.e. via epoxy glue)?

Hard to answer without knowing what the mount is for.  I wouldn't want a permanent mount on my board for something I might rarely use, might want an entirely different type of mount for something valuable or non-floating vs. something cheap and floaty, etc.

Peel & stick like Gopro mounts is a pretty painless, convenient method IMO

Suction cup mount, if well designed, works great and it's removable.

Suction cup first. Peel & Stick second.
No to straps.
No to epoxy.

You don't say what the accessory is so I assume you have yet to patent it.

To really answer your question though, one would need to know what it is you're mounting.

It's a light sabre mount.
Huge market potential.

A. What's a strop?
B. How much experience do you have with SUP?

There are lots of people making things for the SUP market to solve problems no one has. And before you ask, no, no one is going to sign an NDA. Well, maybe spook will.

A strop is the leather thing they sharpen razors with. Maybe he's going to mount a barber chair to the board.

I've been using magnets to mount things on my 14'-4" aluminum board, but obviously that's not a solution for typical construction.

I've been using ac electromagnets to make my aluminum board hover. Unfortunately the eddy currents make it get hot very quickly, but I've been able to make pancakes for thirty, so it's not a total loss.

Really? WTF? I can't get magnets to stick to my aluminum board.

Don't go there. We told him it was an aluminum SUP, but it's really an old 100 gallon propane tank. Hilarious to watch PDX try to stand on it.

I was more hoping that it would be Brooke, resurrected from the Blue Lagoon.
