Yes, Dave Daum definetely shapes some great looking boards. Their shop is close by so I plan on demoing their 8-6 Laser soon. At 190 pounds it will be interesting to see how well I can paddle it. How much do you weigh?

Hey Magenta - I paddled Dave's 8-6 Laser (blue board) recently at Cardiff and it is surprisingly stable, and fast.  I weigh 190 myself and it wasn't an issue.  Get your credit card ready :)

That's good to know. Was it glassy or choppy the day you rode it? Did you get any good waves?

It was a nice glassy afternoon session a couple weeks ago, maybe 2-3 ft.  Caught some great waves that afternoon.  The board is really quick down the line.  Think it is close to 120 liters which is the same as my Kings SS.

What is "RSP"?

The dimensions are 8'4" x 31" x 4.25" x 115 liters. My previous summer board was 7'11" x 31.25" x 4.5" x 117 liters.

Glassed with 1.0 foam, 6 6 4  top and 6 6 bottom. Five FCS II boxes. White, not clear, orange pad, orange pin lines. Weighs 18 pounds with pad, fins, and RSP.

It's a great looking board but I'm surprised it weighed in at 18 pounds all up considering you chose 1 pound EPS. Did you ask Dave Daum about this?

664 top 66 bottom glass. Cardiac Arrest Brain Fahrt - 1.5 foam. Will weigh again on a real scale without all five fins. My 7'11" weighs 15.6 but was glassed with innegra..Not a fan of superlight contest destructo boards that pressure ding just looking at them. And we have rocks here on the sand, they hurt your feet and ding your board..

Thanks! I've been meaning to weigh my boards. Did you get E or S cloth?

E cloth. Dave preferred it. Better feel and in a short board not useful strength gains for the cost..

What's the difference in "feel" between S and E? Did you guys discuss substituting 4 oz S cloth for the 6 oz E so the board would be lighter?

Old school. Very slightly less stiff. Dave's approach has been to try and create a true short board feel on a short sup..

MrBig!!! Wow, what a cool looking board! And thanks for your encouragement on my post about learning on my 6' 10", that cool feedback really keeps me going when it's tough. That's some really good info on the King's/Dave Daum process. Sounds like a great outfit. I've only been SUP'ing a month, and I'm already thinking what kind of board I'd like for my second board. A little more volume for sanity's sake, and maybe narrower for barrels. The guy who sold me my present board (to his credit, he told me it would be "...impossible to learn on.") said my board is high 80's or low 90's in volume, custom shaped, so he didn't know exactly. So I'm getting a lot of fun waves on it (still super difficult to spin around and chase down a left or right peak behind me) but I'm used to 18 5/8" wide in barrels, so I am peeking at 28" wide boards. I see from your posts and your list of boards in your quiver that you have a lot of experience with different boards. In your opinion, would a gain of 8-10 liters in volume offset the extra tippiness from dropping an inch in width? My dream board looks to be this: http://blueplanetsurf.com/collections/stand-up-paddle-boards/products/blue-planet-711-x-28-flame-thrower-carbon-2015   13 inches longer than what I'm on, but only 8 or 10 liters more volume. I surf a hollow, ledgy, partly closed-out beachbreak, so this is even a lot of length. My other fave is maybe the 7' 2" JP Slate, 28 wide, like your 7' 6". So yeah... think 28 will be tippier than 29 when I add length and volume? Great looking board there.

Feral, I am honored that you are asking for my opinion in an area that I can only imagine. Based on what you have accomplished so far, the Blue Planet board will get you in those barrels WAY sooner because of the extra length and I suspect the reduction in width will not be a problem for you.

The only thing in my personal experience that even comes close is the differences between my 7'11" King's and my 8'4" King's which is actually lower in volume and an inch narrower.

Paddles faster and gets in earlier. Given the fact that you would be going from a 6'10" to a 7'11" which is a HUGE increase on a board as short as your 6'10" you will the Mayor at your local spot! Guaranteed!!

You also need to take into consideration the rail and nose and tail width.  My King's 7'8x27 16" tail 91L with thinner rail is tippier verses my friend's Starboard Pro 7'7x27 16.5" tail 95L with fuller rail.
