New JP's
« on: June 04, 2015, 07:10:04 AM »
Over the weekend, I found a shop in the outer banks of NC selling some boards on craigslist that had me salivating in disbelief.  Not only that, I saw the ad an hour after it was posted.  A phone call later and I was heading to the outer banks all along trying to decide what to sell when I get back to pay for this.  I think I going to sell my Laird now because of the overlap I have.

I had always liked the JP surf model along with the JL stun guns and the new  world wides.  Thought one of these would complement my Foote fish that I have. Well, here was a 9'2" for sale that was basically brand new for $650. All that way, about 1600 miles, for 1 board. No way.  There was also a 10'2 fusion that was used and in really good shape for an additional $500.00.  This will be the small, choppy, gutless day board for myself and the family and friend board since it had held up so well as a rental. Both have the ledge handles which make it a breeze for carrying them.   the guy also had basically new JP wide body surfs for sale for $650 also. the 8'2 and the 7'4.  I felt weird leaving without buying those too. Don't know if that makes sense or not.

Get home and the next day there is a little wave.  Took out the 9'2 surf in some small waste high stuff.  I was not expecting miracles, but just wanted to try it.  The board performed really good in the gutless surf. Probably would have been better to take the 10'2 that day but I was itching to try the surf.  Turned when and where I wanted it to. Cant wait to try it in some waves with some power now.  The board seemed to balance really well. When I jumped up on it the first time, it just seemed natural and I was not having to micro adjust my foot placement.  It seemed like it had a big sweet spot for standing.  After riding the surf model, the larger fusion has my interest peaked at how it will surf.  I will need to dial in the fins on the surf but I am really happy so far with how it performs.

Mind of an addict:

"Gas and tolls 1600miles.. just to spend $650?  Makes no sense.'"
"Gas and tolls 1600miles.. so I can spend $1150?  Makes total sense."

Excellent buy! Love the JP Surf wood in my limited experience with one. Fast, smooth and stable.

Have an 8'8" Surf Wide Body wood....has been my go-to favorite board in all conditions for a over a year, though the Surf handles chest high-plus much better.

I picked up a 9'2" Jimmy Lewis Stun Gun this Spring, best board of its kind/style available in my area. Would have bought a JP 9'2" Surf in a heartbeat if I found one available.

I wish JP had more reliable distribution and dealers here in the US, their designs are top-notch.

OK, I thought I would follow up with this.

I was finally able to get this board out into some decent surf.  With Joaquin swell hitting Eastern Florida, it was a good opportunity to get it wet and have some fun.  Waves were head high to DOH on the sets.  This was the fin set up I had in it.

The board took the drops like a champ.  Being just a little on the big side ( I would have preferred the 8'10 but can't complain for the price) I was able to sit outside and take any of the big ones coming through. It was not lining up real good. Some would though and getting in just a hair earlier allowed me to get out in front of some of the waves. It was a lot of big drops and then trying to outrun the lip before getting knocked head over heels. The board was agile and never missed a beat. I feel I could probably tune it in a little bit more.  Some offshore wind came on later in the day and made it a little choppy. Kinda through me off a little and made me have to concentrate a little bit more.  I could turn the board as I chose. I was able to hit the lip a few times on the inside on some of the waves  i made and it was no problem with the board.  This is where I think I could tweek a little the fins to improve performance.
