Looks like  a great product and even better if the price goes down to $150 or so.
It also does not seem to have a lanyard to secure to the board as a safety against loosing a $339 piece of technology.
Unclear if results can be downloaded to computer for review with GPSart Pro or other software?
Seems like an improvement over the Puck but feature set might not match the SpeedCoach that also provides stroke rate I think.
I will stuck with my $50 minute Canmore GP-102 as a poor man substitute and just look with envy... Not waterproof and too small anyway to stuck on a board and read from a standing position.

Glad to see that there are now two dedicated products for SUP and that they are supporting the forum with advertisement.

Congratulation on the deal.

I saw this http://www.velocitek.com/support/software/ on the site.  It sounds like it imports and saves individual tracks/workouts/runs to a Velocitek format on PC or Mac for use in their software (which has an export function that allows saving in other formats KML, GPX for use in Google Earth, etc).

That is a plus and GPS Replay seems to be bundled with the product so that is one small saving.

Just in time for my birthday ;D
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Looks cool. Would love to have it interface with the strain gauge and accelerometer I'd like to see in the paddle shaft so that it would display power and cadence also.

very nice and I am a LONG time supporter of velocitek having owned every generation of their products.

I am hoping to use there e-compass the "shift" to win a few sailing races this year.

But..I want another digit on speed. The damping and second digit on the SUP coach work well.

Hi All,

I can shed some light on a few of the questions here!

@Luc, The Makai does not have a lanyard, but the mounting system was carefully designed to get pounded in surf and stay in place. We did lots of product testing in decent-sized surf last winter and never had a problem. The Makai has results mode which displays your maximum and average speeds, distance traveled and elapsed time. These results are on screen only and cannot be downloaded.

@Glowmaster, Thanks for the props! We're extremely excited Makai.

Keep the posts coming. We'll be happy to answer any questions the Stand Up  Zone community has about the Makai or any of our products!

Best,

Charles

Looks like a great product. But the price is really high compared to alternatives in the market.

Well I ended-up buying a brand new SpeedPuck because:
1) Makai was back-ordered a couple of times
2) Purcahse in Canada was a lot more affordable
After a couple of weeks of use fixed on my deck (fcs mount) it started to show large amount of condensation under the screen.

I got a RMA number back right away and I am shipping it to Charles under the warranty.
Still shipping from Canada to USA is not cheap so here goes the savings - a little bit disappointing.

Maybe the Gods were irate that I should have gone for the Makai instead.....

Luc

I have been using my Makai a few times, and the simplicity of it along with the shape appeal to me.
It become quite unobtrusive once set on the board and it is a good tool to work with.
