SIMSUP 3 review
« on: May 25, 2015, 03:19:41 PM »
WOW! The best 3 sessions I've ever had so far... Super stable, turns so easy to catch waves and then very fast acceleration paddling and then BOOM!!! Down the wave with plenty of speed and no bouncing!!!

On the wave is like a go skateboard on a bowl so smooth and reactive... And if you step a bit forward you get more speed! I'm in love with this board  :-*

Me:

Goofy 46 years old 5' 7" 180 lbs with a wonky knee. I can surf up to head high waves but I've only been doing sup surfing for 2 years. I live in Manhattan, NYC so only surfing on the weekends and surf trips. I have a slingshot space pickle 8'6" 32" 156lts

Sessions 1:

Pick up a SIMSUP 3, 8'4" 32" 136lts from the awesome http://covewatersup.com in Santa Cruz totally recommend them. Oliver suggested to go to cowell break, nice and mellow right hander.

So the board looks great, thin rails, step deck and fat back. Quad set up with a crazy bottom profile. I started to doubt if I went to small but I'm already at cowell all suit up going down the staircase. Start paddling on my knees passing the white water and the moment of truth.... Quick jump and I'm on my feet! And still dry! The board is stable but the sweet spot is soooo small compared to my space pickle... Started paddling past some white water and a nice waist high wave comes in... Turned around and BOOMB! On the wave... So smooth and I tried to bottom turn and splash!!! I surfed for 2 hrs and it was great... towards the end I was getting better at the bottom turn since is my weak side on right hand cause I'm goofy!

Session 2

Much of the same but I could drop so late and still on control but still no total success on my bottom turns.

Session 3

I had booked a lesson with covewater and I was lucky to get Dan...he is calm and a bit zen totally recommended to progress your ridding! He took me to privates in capitola, much nicer and bigger waves than cowell.

Here is where I falled in love with the SIMSUP boards....the best session ever! Eventhough it was soo windy that I saw a guy windsurfing! Did 3 big drops on shoulder high on total control, turning the board like a skateboard and finally nailing riding on my backside since privates is also a right hander wave. I salute you Dan for all your tips!

Needless to say that I automatically ordered a board from Kirk at SIMSUP. I decided that I could go a bit smaller so I'm getting a SIMSUP ST 8'0 x 30 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 129L with the vector net and carbon rails... 8 weeks delivery time seems as an eternity.

The couple of times I was on rented Simsup, 8'8"x32, it was the easiest wave entry board I ever tried for the L41 conditions.

You can find Kirk, himself, hailing out of Privates/Sharks to ride his boards pretty often.  I turned around last week to catch a wave and there he was suddenly in front of me.  I startled and fell off the wave.

Great boards. Had a blast on my 8'8" x 32" board today. Totally addicted to the S-P-E-E-D!

Some say it doesn't turn well due to wide tail, but i don't see that at all. This thing turns fine. When the back foot is in the correct spot, you can snap it, take the fin out, ect.

+2!! Just picked 2 Sims today, a 7'8 S3 and an 8'0 S4 on CL from a really nice and extremely lucky guy (lives less then a block from Cowell's) in the house he grew up in. due to a back injury and some extra pds he can't ride his sims anymore. My wife and I tried them out and we both fell in love with them from the first ride. everything they say about these boards is true, relatively stable, FAST, maneuverable and FUN!!!!
A must in every quiver!

So cool that the shaper rides those waves and the boards do so well in them.
