I went out a Newport Point about 18th street today and it was finally fairly clean.  It was shoulder-head high, really juicy and pretty walled.  Which is all OK by me except I brought the wrong board.  I brought a simmons style board which I don't ride so well, at least in that top-to-bottom hollow surf; wish I'd brought something shorter and narrower.

There's always the dark side. I've been long boarding with the hoard at blackies.

So we weren't very far apart today.  Should have paddled over and dropped in on you!   8)  Some guys rip on those wide boards, just not me.  If I remember correctly, you are one of them.

What the heck is going on?  South, Catalina eddy winds in September?  They are usually done by July around here.  It's time for the off-shores to begin, not the south morning wind.   Blown out this morning and supposed to be lighter but still windy tomorrow morning.  Freaking weird year.

Zoo, it was UGLY here this morn (no. baja) and it's been a grind, only clean 1 1/2 hours between 6 and 7:30 most days, with the (very) occasional mid-day reprieve. And I saw you were reading my threads... conditions a little tough to learn in. At least I got the right board! Jajaja!

Eddy is one of my best friends, when he is visiting southern Cali., we are usually ripping windsurfing on the central coast, the last several days have been great, but this isn't really a windsurfing site so sorry.  :-\
Diversity!
It takes a quiver to do that.

The problem is, it ain't Eddy.  It's more like Gertrude.  Me thinks the two unnatural hot blobs of water above us, 92 degree water in both gulfs, and hot water slamming into the Arctic is more our problem. I call her Gertrude.  This winter will be very Interesting.

Agree.  OCSurf and I were saying that it could have something to do with the El Nino.  Might not bode well for clean conditions this fall.

How does El Nino effect winter surfing in So-Cal???

Friend of mine supposedly told me that he had some of the best session during el nino winter....

It depends how it hits.  First, we are never guaranteed weather due to El nino, it's a 50/50 chance for bringing us weather.  We need cold water in the northern pacific and arctic.  And we still have that nasty hot water above us producing the blocking high.  It has no where to go at the moment.

If  we get a lot of rain, like A lot.  It will clean out some river beds that have been dormant.  It also brings us more swell, we get waves that are generated closer to our shores, lowers interval unfortunately, but we do get more waves. And usually bigger.

The big soupy mess is due to the rivers flowing and bigger waves closer together.

Coupled with an El nino, is usually snow.  I personally don't think we are getting any this year.  So we will probably have more water to deal.with than normal. I hope we don't end up with a mess I think we are going to have.

And a side note, if that blocking high in the pacific doesn't break up,, I don't see us getting even rain.  The hot blobs did it to us last year. They are causing this south to north pattern  as well.as the extra heat in both gulfs.  It's deffinetly an el.nino.  but not a normal one.

This is a good synopsis of.the.current pacific. Good links at bottom of his blog

Dumb jokes aside:  I know it's typical spring in SoCal, but it's been so freaking windy in the mornings that I haven't been getting my quota of surf sessions.  Think I'm getting punchy and writing stupid things on the Zone.  Before I completely lose my mind, I'm going to go in the morning just to get wet, it will probably suck.

time to bring out the big dog for choppy conditions.

Yeah, I just bought an 8'6" X 31.5 Blair and surfed it yesterday in full on slop conditions.   I actually had a pretty fun time and it seems like the board is just the ticket for sloppy surf.  Stable yet turns pretty tight, maybe it's my favorite board ever.
