Where do I go to learn?
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:05:00 PM »
Hi everyone,

I just moved to LA from Seattle a few weeks ago and now that the house is unpacked I'm dying to get back on the water.  I've mostly paddled Puget Sound and messed around with some freighter wave surfing, but I've only SUSed in proper waves a few times. The board I have is a 12'6" naish one inflatable which I'd like to retire for a surf shape. So long story short, I'd love any advice on where I could go for flatwater, and also where would be a good spot for a beginner sup surfer to start and rent a board that would be better for waves than mine is. Thanks!

Where in LA?  That will help.  You know us Angelinos, we measure all distances using a clock.

If you're in LA proper, hit  Marina Del Rey for a great, protected SUP spot. Put in at Mother's Beach and you can easily paddle a 5 mile loop or even more.

For SUS, if your in this area, Sunset is the non-secret beginners spot but if you want to be alone you can hit most any of the breaks along SaMo when it's 1-2 feet and splash around a bit.

Thanks for the responses! I'm in Sherman Oaks, working in Universal City. I work second shift so I've got the weekday mornings to go play hopefully! And anywhere I can go where I can learn without getting in people's way is a plus!

I have bought a number of things from Sup-Position.  Three boards and a number of accessories.  Ralph knows his stuff, might be worth the drive to check him out.
