31kph / 19.5mph downwinding... in a surfski
« on: May 15, 2015, 05:43:17 AM »
I have a bunch of friends who surfski, and some SUP too.. I have to say that it's something I want to try.  Part of the attraction is being in a double surfski like this, so you a) are safer if you fall off, and b) have someone to share those wild glides with.. This is one fun ride.. with a near perfect beach landing through surf..

They certainly have the conditions in SA.. As we talk about downwinding safety in other threads, double surfski seems to have a major advantage in gnarly conditions over being out there as individuals.. I have a free surkski lesson from a SUP buddy, and so this is something I'm going to try this summer with the goal to do a downwind run on a double SS. I know this will improve my SUP downwind skills and be a lot of fun.

Here's the view from the back seat..

Wow, just wow.  Those conditions are what we call 'Big Fatties' .  Very exciting with the backdrop.  Thanks.  It pumped me up and made me think that a surfski will be my next purchase.  Getting synched looks even more challenging than an OC-2 but what a gas.

That has to be one of the best ones I've seen. Captures the whole experience.

I am originally from a surfski background, so I end up paddling sitting down a whole lot.
One of the things that I am noticing is that the more I use my surfski, the stronger core-muscles I have. This, directly affects my stand up paddling by making me want to engage my core-muscles and rotation when paddling standing up.

One of the things I am noticing is that most people aren't engaging in hip rotation while on a SUP, but perhaps it's just the people I hang out with.

Bottom line, I think that both sports complement each other so very well - not to mention how fun they both are.
