epoxy hot coat question
« on: May 02, 2015, 06:38:57 AM »
I just tried an epoxy hot coat on a kiteboard as a test before doing into a sup.
It flowed out nicely and filled the weave.
After 18 hrs in 19c garage that is dry climate,  the epoxy has a waxy/ oily surface.
I used easy composites coating epoxy that is supposed to be for this kind of work http://www.easycomposites.co.uk/products/epoxy-resin/epoxy-coating-resin.aspx

What's happening?  Should I let it cure more?  Wash it with soap N water?
I cleaned a small area with aceton and it doesn't help.

That's normal. It's called Amine Blush.

It will wash off with a Scotchbright and water and maybe a little wetsanding. You will need to do this if you plan on adding another coat.

Good info here. http://www.westsystem.com/ss/how-to-use/

As was said, it'll come off with that or a light sanding.

Also remember to be careful with acetone and epoxy. It can cause you to become sensitized and have a skin reaction. Denatured alcohol or just citrus cleaner is what most recommend to keep your skin safe.

Hej, Thanks as always for the quick feedback and wealth of information.

Manufacturer of epoxy claims specifically that this formulation will not have amine blush. I've contacted them.

If I use scotch Brite and or wet sand and water, then I have to polish it. I've never done that. So I wetsand with 400-600, then polish with compound on a pad..
This us what I was hoping to avoid...I'm lazy.

I'll try the alcoho,  and thanks for warning.

For gloss on epoxy, I sand to at least 1200, 2000 is even better. And then compound.

I washed off the amine blush with soap N water.  Can see it would need work to make it glossy.
Lotta work to sand 400-600-800-1200-2000. Then buff.

Plus epoxy isn't very uv resistent, not that it's a problem at 56N....

Anyone try sanding to 400, then using 2 component clear polyurethane?  That wwould give high gloss and uv protection without hours of sanding.
