At 3:20 in this video you will see one of the Vas brothers kick his board through a Nias lip while paddling out. It's a functional move I used a few times this winter when it was big. My concern is getting hit by the board though. So I was thinking that the key would be to kick the board slightly to the side to avoid having it slam back down on you in case the board didn't punch through the lip. What are your experiences?

When you kick your board over successfully it doesn't hit you. You go backwards down the face briskly. You and your board are well separated, with the board getting the leashride while you are trying to figure out which way is up. It's one of my signature moves. I wish it wasn't.

Just like we used to do in the "olden days". You paddle prone (then) stand up and shoot your board over the lip. It over the lip and you under. It seems to work in my limited SUS experience in sizeable conditions.

Best to do it when the wind is blowing offshore.

Ponobill - So you don't think it's necessary to kick the board slightly to the side a little?

TW - That was a little before my time but I always thought that was pretty cool when they stood up and kicked their big ol heavy boards through the lip.

That looks like a pretty risky maneuver. It doesn't look like the wave face would be all that predictable.

Get away with it nine times and the tenth time "Kee-lunk", maybe on the noggin.

Useless maneuver. The guy was lucky in the video.

When some one is coming down the line and you are in the way,
You have a responsibility to handle your equipment so that is does not
get in the way..just ditching it is not the best solution unless the guy is gunning for you.
I have done this maneuver  in just that circumstance.
Often I get sucked back but avoid being a hazard...

Hardly useless. You have a double overhead wave feathering over you, and it's clear as you go up the face that you are NOT going to make it. What do you do?

A. Stand there and get clobbered with your board right in the mix and enjoy a leashride as well as being whacked a few times by your board?

B. Try as hard as you can to make it, and when the end is plainly at hand, boot your board through the lip. Your board is on the far side of the wave. You are now falling backwards down the face, and you're going to get worked, but your board is NOT in the mix. The wave is moving 20 miles per hour. The lip is past the board in a few milliseconds.

It works. I've done it far too many times. I've never had a problem with it other than the upside down and backwards ride through the washing machine that was going to happen anyway if I didn't ditch. I hate ditching my board and diving into the face of a big wave. Pure chance whether or not it nails someone, or drags you endlessly, or breaks the leash. Near zero chance of a busted leash with the alley-oop method.

I'm not the only one that does this. I've seen everyone from Archie to Zane do it as well.  Had to work at that A to Z, but it's true.

Thanks for correcting me as I spoke with no experience.

It just looked like a risky thing to do that late in the wave. It seemed like the odds of making the board go up and over consistently like that would be low. My instinct would be to push the board to the side so that in case the board went over the falls ahead of me, I wouldn't land on it.

You're the man Bill. You've been there, I haven't. I trust what you say.

Yes, it's a totally functional maneuver, that I, relative newb to sup surfing, pulled off a few times this winter on big days, but my original question remains. Let me rephrase it a little better this time...

If I'm unsuccessful at punching the board through the lip, (thus risking having the board come down on top of me), would it be better to kick it slightly to the left (I'm a regular foot) so that WHEN the lip brings it back down my body will hopefully be out of the way?

Very important to note he is jumping to the side..

I have landed on the nose of several boards doing this..
The shorter boards end up in your ribs...
Often the board will buckle or break in half
from the force of the wave pushing the back of the board up
and your weight pushing the nose down.

Peligro !

If you paddle fast enough you can do this:

If you can make that work it's probably fine. I'm just trying to keep my reptile brain from gibbering too loudly and get the board through the lip by any means. If it makes it over, you're gold. Well, not gold, you still have that sliding backwards and upside down thing to contend with.

I've seen Connor shoot through the lip of a feathering wave still on his board, fly up in the air higher than the board, and then land on it and keep paddling.

I don't do that.
