Downwinder with rotating helmet pole "Dork Cam"
« on: April 28, 2015, 12:54:48 AM »
I tried out this new camera mount.  I got some decent footage but I'm not sure I will use it again.  It really gets in the way, my hand and paddle kept bumping into the poles when switching sides.  It does show the bumps well from some angles though, so I put together this little video:

Hi Robert, Great to see another POV. Although it has some strange angles on the way round, you're right some show the bumps and action really well. The view from the back is similar to the 3rd person view set up I use, but keeps the distance from the head fixed, while mine is from my waist. Both give some "strange" looking body movements elsewhere, and some weird cartoonish perspectives (big head, small feet). Both imperfect IMHO compared to the DJ mount, but hey, if you don't try, you don't know!

Based on the footage, it looks like you could easily add a hoolahoop, but that might complicate the paddling!

Even with that light gopro I'd bet the weight was significant and awkward.  I put a 4 pound cam directly on top of a helmet and did a whole Maliko run.  Neck was sore afterwards.  Only did it once.  Great POV tho. Drone eventually will be best footage.  I have a pal who is using a Panny GH3 in his and the result is spectacular.  It's light enough yet doesn't have that distortion of the wide angle which makes everything flat.

Ha ha  Robert.... you are a good sport to "twirly" an entire run  ;D
more fun than a fixed cam and give some interesting views.... I liked the concentration while surfing the big board.

Good vid!

The down angle gave an interesting perspective  ::)
It's not overhead to me!

I  wondered why Noone used those   :P but thanks.!   Cool views for us no-bumps folks to watch and try to learn more.

Question? Why aren't there out-rigger sups? The oc1 at the beginning made me think of it.

TallDude, yes I thought it made me look like a big head bobble head doll.

Deepmud, there have been experiments with outriggers and catamarans.  The SIC Standamaran is pretty awesome:
