Any weight will need to be displaced with board volume and a substance lighter than water.

(I wonder if there is a shorter way to say that?)

Well. If you take a standard volume board shape and make it from solid lead, it will sink. If you take the same shape and volume and make it out of thin Mylar and fill with helium, it will fly. So it figures that board weight is somehow related to the volume equation for a good SUP that will float on water.

I believe the weight of the board, rider, and accessories (suit, paddle, cameras, etc) all need to be taken into account when looking at volumes.

A heavy board will be lower in the water but could be more stable than a light carbon board that is corky.

Then there is what I refer to as surface area. A wide, long, and thin board will be more stable and easier to ride than a board with exactly the same volume with different distribution of that volume.

Dave Daum made a 10 Crocodile contest board with a volume of less than 100 liters as an example - same volume as the 7'11" he won the Wrightsville Pro-Am on..

But your nom-de-plume suggests you know considerably more about this subject than you are letting on!  8)  8)

The weight of the board is generally relative, but not linear, to volume.  Using the same construction schedule on two different size boards, the lower volume board will weigh more per unit of volume.  Bill, are you working on a new construction approach?

Mr. Big, that 10' 100 liter Crocodile sounds like it could be a fun longboard for sure.

Is no one else bothered by the fact that is Bill asking this question?

The more I understand about shaping...the less I know.  word.

Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

All I know is that now I want a helium filled board with enough volume to float me.....anyone got a spare zeppelin lying around?

Weight of board has nothing to do with volume.  You can have a heavy board with low volume (over glassed with 2lb foam) or a light board with high volume (hollow core carbon race board).

Volume is simply the amount of space the board occupies.

The weight of the rider will determine the necessary volume of a board for a given task (racing vs surfing, for example)

Weight reduces effective volume.  If two boards of identical volume have different weights, the heavier board will seem to have less volume.

What floats better, a liter of lead or a liter of foam?

As asked, the answer is: absolutely nothing. Weight of a board has absolutely nothing to do with volume.

Asking how the weight plays into the volume is pretty open-ended.  You could say they're unrelated, because you could take a hollow board of volume X that weighs 20 lbs., and filling it with lead might make it weigh 400 lbs. but it wouldn't affect the volume.  On the other hand, the performance would change.
