67 year old heart attack survivor..wants to surf at Doheny
« on: April 25, 2015, 07:00:30 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am trailer camping at Doheney  May 11-12-13-14. I would love to get some hints
or help regarding catching waves . We are coming down from Washington..where I have been an SUP nut on flat water for 3 years. I lived on the Venice Canals from 1970-1979.
I then got in to sailing and sailed all over central America. I then moved to a log cabin in Washington. Now, having beaten cancer and a heart attack..I have some strong bucket list things I want to do. Surfing on my SUP board is #1.

As a "bucket list" task..I really want to learn to surf-sup. If you are there those dates,
any hints or suggestions would be great to hear.

I am 67, 6 foot 6,  220 pounds and have a big yellow board. I hope to meet some
interesting new people! If I need to pay someone  to give me some one-on one
instruction..that is fine!!!

Thanks....

Dave Davis

I lived in Venice 1975-77 when I was in my last two years of professional school.  Rented a house a three minute walk from the beach close to a canal for 90 dollars a month (shared with two others at 90 each).

Loved it then, it was poor artists and deranged hippies.  It has been ruined by yuppie-fication and the Hollywood hipsters and of course, now costs a fortune to live there.

BigoleSup,
I should be able to hook up with you. I live right above Doheny and surf there on an off.  I'm 6'7 and 240 lbs. I'd be glad to give you some pointers. I usually paddle or surf mid week mornings.

pm me. we'll make it happen.

I'll bring my big yellow board ;)

bigolesup:

Feel free to private message me as well.  Like TallDude, I'm also a local and am familiar with the breaks in the area.

If you're trailer camping, then you should consider loading your board onto your tow vehicle at some point and heading 15 minutes south to Dogpatch at San Onofre; that location has a positive SUP vibe and more pie for beginners than the small slice at Doheny.

Over 50, but usually pushing it like I'm 25 and paying for it later.

Is it still true that  you can really sup at doheny unless you are south of the hammer?  Although I did at  main doheny  when I was demoing a board with a rep  one cloudy morning with  only 2 pruners out and no one said a word except hi to  the rep who they both knew.

South of the hammer only. If there's no one there, they don't usually care. I'll practice race starts and finishes through the surf mid week in the mornings, and they don't say anything. If there is the usual crowd though, and you're in the line up, stay south of the hammer. I'm usually 1" south of it >:(

Keep us posted where and when and somebody from this board will meet up with you.  If it works for us, my wife and I would love to meet you that weekend and we can swap heart attack stories while we paddle.

p.s. Grats on being given the blessing of more time on the planet, and to surviving both and living to tell the tale.

Yep, just stay south of Thor's Hammer.   I was there in Feb.  I rode in the thick of the surf pack for a good hour in my first session and didn't find out until after the session that it's not allowed.  Nobody seemed worried about it in the water (and if they were, didn't stink-eye me and certainly didn't say anything to me), but I felt bad after learning about the rule (which I did while chatting with a local at a coffee shop after the fact).  After that, I stuck south of the hammer for my other sessions and had a great time.  There were a few locals out with us....totally cool vibe.

the only thing is the water south of the hammer is totally gross  I been there 2 xs  both times got really sick afterwards so   if you fall  pinch your nose and close your mouth.

Usually, but not always. I've seen it crystal clear in the fall when it's been flat for a number of days. Yes I've seen the bottom, but it's rare. I've never been sick from my hundreds of sessions over the years there. A lot of those (most) were prone surfing when I was younger. Because of the sill that spills from the river mouth, it will usually be murky. That doesn't mean it's constantly contaminated. The county dump run-off drains right to Poche beach. Poche has been the most contaminated beach in OC for a long time. They say the seagulls are the problem, but I've watched them dump bio-hazard materials from hospitals at the dump. When it rains, it drains into Poche beach.

Boneyard looks a little nasty. That's why all those getty dwelling longboard punks are the way they are!
