Filament Winder

I want one of these.

Rough guess break-even would be about 15 to 30 usable tubes.

I can image that someday soon we could wind a monocoque board. Probably now if the board was all convex or flat shapes across the filament path. The winding head would have to be able to lay fibre into a concave depression and somehow make it stick for footwells and concave bottoms.

I could totally see making a Standamaran with one of these. Pontoons!

I think you could design a filament-wound surfboard, but the winding method would dictate the shape. Not a great way to start a design. You inherently need a convex surface, though you could wind a shape with a gap above small concave areas and then compress the filament into the shape with a mold. But sheesh. Easier ways to do that kind of stuff. Nice for making tupes and tanks though.

It is possible to filament wind and "tape lay" prepreg over complex surfaces. But it is complex and with a board unlike some of the aerospace parts you need to somehow get the core out of the board if you want it to be hollow. Easier said than done.

Tape layers are mighty expensive too.

Cool fab, but they don't lay tape under tension like filament winders do.

Tape layers by design are not supposed to introduce any tension into the layup. This is to ensure the final product comes out after curing like it is supposed to. Any tension could cause it to warp. This is different to tape or filament winding where tension is added. The other thing with tape layers especially with the size of the partin the vid is to ensure repeatability without contamination. Something hard to achieve with hand layup of prepreg on that scale.

I can see in the future lower cost tape layers coming on the market, but would it be used on a SUP? Unlike the 5 axis router, I think not. Hard to replace a person for good quality layup in a small scale.

Blackeye. The filament winder posted is a very cool piece of equipment, especially how it can wrap the ends as well. I guess it could wrap an oval as well as a cylinder cross-section, and so if they can do that, it is a small step to wrap a tapered oval, and then a further step to curl one of the ends up to make a board shape... But you need a core or a mandrel to wrap, that you can heat up and pour out to make a hollow board.. Interesting challenge.

Now when they make a desktop version of this...

oooh - I'lll take one each of those machines too. Massive tape guns.

I was thinking the 2 axis X-Winder would be good for paddle shafts. It got me wondering if the 4 axis one could do a whole paddle over a foam covered mandrel. And if that, why not a whole board? The concave thing gets in the way. Or rather, doesn't get in the way like a mandrel should.

The future of desktop machines like the X-Winder would have to be in versatility, ie put a milling head on it, a tape head, and the winding gear.
