If rough conditions and unable to stand..is it:

NDK (kneel-down kiting), or
On your knees and SUK'ing?   :-X

COOL! I wanna try it. Those kite rigs are NOT cheap though!
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

A few years ago it seemed like SUKing was going to be the next big thing but it seems to have died off to pretty much zero.  My understanding that if there is enough wind to SUK then you could just use a light wind kite setup that would work a lot better than trying to ride a big barge.  Now that foil boards are in vogue for light wind kiting, there is no reason to even bother with using a SUP.  When the wind is dead, paddle the SUP.  When it starts blowing, pull out the kite equipment.  Don't try to mix the two.

^^ yep. I think thats the catch.

The trick seems to be if enough wind to be able to [water] launch the kite would be enough to ride a kite surfboard. I am curious about SUP boards like the JP Slate though. Or maybe the new lightwind closed cell kites.

yeah, it's been tried many times before and it's always as much fun as it appears in that video...i.e., not very. there are light wind kite boards that are far superior to trying to use a SUP. SUP till the wind comes up, and then pack it all away and pull out legit kite gear thereafter.

I don't get it. Why bother with a thick and wide sup when you can use a regular surfboard?

A Sup will float you,
A surfboard needs more wind to get on plane..
A Kiteboard even more wind to get on plane..

I understand but wouldn't a regular longboard work just as well for kite surfing in super light wind?

There is one huge advantage to SUK. One could go out in very light flakey air with a closed cell kite and a backpack with 3 piece paddle in. If ever the kite did fall in a lull and one was unable to relaunch one could just switch to paddle to get in.

but SUPs really NEVER get on a plane...they're not designed that way, as opposed to a windsurf board. so yeah, they'll float you, but...i think every kiter i know who also SUPs has tried using a kite on one, and it lasts less than 15 minutes each time. but if someone thinks it is fun, that's all that should matter to them.
