I've been strapping my belt pack to my CamelBak fanny pack since the very first Round the Rock, and it works good, although any real time inflation of the PFD in an emergency would be deplorable. But, thats not why I'm wearing it.
I believe that would still keep you from getting a ticket, since isn't the rule that the pfd must be "readily deplorable"?

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. The USCG is not looking to give out tickets, just keep people safe.

Renewing the pfd question

I use fishing line to replace the pin. Works fine.

Wow, never thought of that.  Monofilament?  I'm just thinkin that it's designed to be tough to break, what pound test?

I think I used 10 or 15 lb test and wrapped it a couple of times. You're just trying to prevent inadvertent deployment.

I'll pass along the suggestions for sure. They've asked me to pass along any ideas.

By not engaged yes...I mean not screwed in. Only time I bother to screw it in is if I'm going out off shore in sketchy conditions and even then I'm far more interested in making sure my leash is good. IMO PFDs are 90% show, its the 10% when I have it screwed in. Most of the time I'm in the water I'm surfing with no PFD at all in conditions that are far more likely to lead to injury on the water.

Here's my flat water race setup for the past 4 years or so. When ocean racing, I don't mess around. I put a leash on.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

1. Websites like NRS are not a good resource for regulation information. Someone show me where the CG requires a type three belt pack inflatable to be worn.

2. How is carrying a PFD, worn or otherwise, going to keep anyone safe?

I like the Fluid 2, and if MTI would sell (for a reasonable price) the rings or pins separately, I'd get one.  24 dollars for a rearm kit is too much, even though I'd probably never need the kit.
Have you tried to orally inflate yours?  It looks pretty easy.......

"Deplorable", that's a good one.  ;D

You can read the Code of Federal Regulations (33 CFR), but some other websites like this one are a much easier read. As for how PFD's help, anything that floats when you get in trouble on the water helps.

The type III inflatables do not have to be worn to be legal. BUT THE CO2 HAS TO BE INSTALLED PROPERLY AND THE GREEN INDICATOR VISIBLE! I use an MTI type III inflatable and have worn it for over 3 years. I have never had to deploy it so I am not sure why I'd ever worry about spending $25 on a replacement cartridge needed only very rarely. I certainly wouldn't "hack" a device whose sole purpose is saving my life, over $25.

Thanks addapost.

That's just what I wanted to know. I've always thought type III's were exempt from having to wear them.

How did you find this out? Is there some place where it says it in writing?

One man's "hack" is another's "customization", or simply "maintenance".  I hear what your saying, but the design is so simple and basic that any number things would work fine and on top of it, my solution is better for the environment.   Would you rather have yet another little piece of plastic that takes 100,000 years to degrade polluting our waters, or a small piece of natural wood, that will degrade?

What I gathered from that is, if a PFD doesn't say on the label that it must be worn to comply, then it doesn't have to be worn.

A type III belt pack inflatable PFD is considered the same as any other type III PFD.

That's good to know. A lot of people seem to think that all inflatables must be worn, but that's not the case. Only type V vest type inflatables need to be worn for compliance which makes more sense.
