Caught My first Overhead Wave Today.
« on: March 28, 2015, 06:30:07 PM »
Although I have been slammed and tumbled by a few overheads, I have never caught one that I am aware of, though some big ones have come from behind that I couldn’t tell how big they were, except by being risen up high in the air.

This one was between Private’s and Sharks in the deep water area that starts to open up at low tide.

I was standing up on the Prowave when it came in, I saw the swell and knew it was something big but didn’t really know until I saw the blasted lip looming way up there behind me.  My literal thought in panic and fear was “Jesus, please preserve my parts”.

It hit, I was parted from the board for an instant, but landed back on it and the rails engaged traveling downward for the bottom turn for the fastest frigging ride I have had so far.  When it lifted me, I thought that I was going to see clouds around me I was so high up on that steep triangle of water.

I gather with those big, steep ones you have to jam the fins down on the lip triangle and then very gingerly skid then lean the rails down the steep incline to catch the bottom turn, rather than leaning forward as in smaller waves.

There were also a lot of four and five footers that allowed me to practice my lip dangling before sliding down into the trough.

It was extremely crowded Saturday today, but I have been out around Sharks and Privates so long, I am able to find the holes during tidal conditions to get waves that are otherwise ignored or that sneak by the proners.  I pretty much managed to get my fill in spite of the crowds.

That darned Prowave is just a wonderful board. It has literally taught me how to trim.  It’s going to take me a few more months to catch up to it’s basic standup paradigm, but on the waves, it is incredible, even at my humble level of learning.

Glad to hear about your stoke! Humble level of learning?  I can't even stand up on that postage stamp of yours...
Sounds like home break advantage is giving you some nice rides.  My son and I were out from 8 - 10 this morning and caught 2 good waves together.  Dream day for Papa!

Very COOL, Cheat! What a rush, I'm sure! I remember my first overhead ride.  Before sunrise, almost in the dark.  In hindsight was a good thing. When I first raced down that big, steep face I could first hear this kind of sucking, puckering sound, then a screaming...both coming oddly enough from me. The first, the puckering, I'm sure you can imagine. The second, the screaming, started as fear and then switched to elation. Good for you! Hope you enjoy many more!

Thanks, Paul.  The Prowave has a definite sweet spot, but it also has "zones" and you have to keep stepping around on it as conditions change, you can seldom just stand still on it, it forces stepping.  It has me hula hooping and loop de looping in ways around my hips, knees and torso that I didn't think I could even do.  When I eventually catch up with it, I am hoping I will have a few moves.

When it is on the waves, those points of instability become a kind of more stable gyroscope and it gives a nice sense of empowerment in some situations.  The Prowave has and continues to be a challenge for me, but that is what I wanted. It is still fun more than discouraging, which is nice too, because I don't like being demoralized.

Carl,
The waves were definitely fun today at Sharks/Privates.  I was out there with my wife from 10:30 till 1:30.  Some really nice clean waves in that "in between" area. I had a couple set waves go all the way through to Privates. Its been awhile since I've seen you out there.  Sorry we missed.
Congrats on the overhead.

Was that you supdiscobay (yellow Kings board/white tee-shirt) that I was talking to about mid day in between Sharks and Privates? I was on the blue and white Hammer.

Too bad we didn't have our SUZ hats on.

Looks like a repeat for tomorrow. That means SUPcheat bags another set wave.

I'll see you if you are there.

I did miss seeing you guys today.  I started out at about 1:45 PM, which is about when I will go out tomorrow.  I was out for about three hours and felt thrashed, but the wave opportunity kept me going.

I may have legs of rubber tomorrow.

Did it really happen, what no pics!   ;)   Just kiddin, sorry, a regression.

Really good on you Karl.  Your grit in becoming a surfer has led you to not minding the tumble and rinse cycle which comes with bigger waves. I know life long surfers that want nothing to do with anything they can't see over.  Basically they hate the wipeout.

I also enjoy your tale of learning all the ins and outs of "your" spot. Having it wired takes time and patience and definitely yields rewards.

I'm not so sure I am interested in repeating the experience anytime soon, too scary.  It was like a six footer that came out of nowhere last year.  Do or die type thing, either try to ride it or get bowled.  Losing track of the board in the washing machine is bracing, but not knowing if your board is coming to get you isn't.

Hard to believe that riding these is routine for some guys.

Its not that warm out here yet.  Water temp is 58 and air temp was 76. I had a white rash guard over my 3/2.  It kept my Kodak video camera I had around my neck against my body when I wasn't using it.  The funny thing is I never took any pics the entire time.  Having too much fun surfing.
