Kalama's New GoPro Mount for SUP
« on: March 26, 2015, 08:33:40 AM »
Dave put the screw inserts into the deck of the board, made the base, and used some carbon paddle tubing for the arm.

The camera framing for the pictures were alittle off as we made some changes before he paddled out and we didn't re-check how it looked.

All in all I'd say the maiden voyage was moderately successful.  Getting together with him today to go over the video portion, should be interesting.

Here's the finished product.  Half way through a helicopter 360.

I don't see anything dangerous about that. It might add a little weight and raise the COM of the board.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Looks like a really nice POV... can't wait to see the vid.. Sort of the opposite of a DJ mount...

??? Test run was in tiny conditions and while Dave's skills are in a different universe to mine- I wouldn't want to be wiping out with that added to the mix.

The POV is very real fresh though and I doubt the weight was noticeable.

It's a longer version of mine.. I've also made a longer version [not that long] but not had a chance to try it..

Looking forward to DK's vid.. This was my shorter nose mount..

I think the big difference between Dave's and DJ's is the method of attachment. DJ tapes his on for careful removal. Dave just runs screws straight into his board with a screw gun. Holes? Just throw some caulking in the holes after. Have to drill a new set of fresh holes next time ::)

And you can contrast these two methods with the set up on the SIC Bullet 17 that Mark Raaphorst built and Jeremy Riggs used for his awesome downwind vid with Livio. It has permanent attachment points for a removeable tripod setup at its tail. Very nice aircraft quality fittings...that ripped my shins to shreds when I paddled it (without the tripod) in Maui..

That would be too funny, but I think Daily said he's using legitimate screw inserts...

So Daily, a lot of people have been wondering, what was the point to your thread "When did you start surfing?"

I'll tell you one thing that's surprising, and is likely the reason for the question given that Daily has been hanging with Kalama. Dave is a relatively new surfer.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I like these elaborate mounts people are inventing to get to get the camera higher, but that's not enough. We also need to get the camera farther away.

My way would be to mount a long carbon shaft off the tail of the board so that it's way back behind the rider.  High enough to be out of the water, but far enough back so as to appear as if someone else was filming. I haven't seen anyone do this yet.
