Island (of Rhode) Paradise
« on: March 22, 2015, 09:22:49 AM »
The weather and surf gods delivered a treat yesterday in the tropical paradise of Rhode Island.

Off-shore winds, a mysterious orange object in the sky, and WAVES.

Three different and usually unreliable forecasts all called for a rising swell peaking around chest to shoulder high with off-shore winds until the late afternoon sea breeze.

Rhode trip. Took my Crocodile and had a great session. Shared some waves with A.J. and Dietlin. Several prone longboarders and shortboarders also in attendance.

Sid, of Waterbrothers, is very conservative and reported that it got up to shoulder high before the sea breeze kicked in..
Let it come to you..

Yeah Sid's report at sunrise said it was as Flat as a pond and the cam matched that report.

As usual, Biggie scores another fun day of wave therapy !!!

yep, I had a great 3 hours in the mid afternoon. started in the snow and finished in sunshine. waist to chest and clean. I was the only sup where I was, with about 14 prone folks. great vibe and everyone was getting their fill, including a couple groms with new gopros on their longboards. awesome.

ps, keep your eyes on friday. if what MS has now holds, it will be fantastic

Damnit!....I was down there today looking at houses. Thought I might talk Sue into letting me sneak in a session but saw the mediocre forecast and didn't bother.

Fun today down south....met up with the creekster. Nice waves, some long rides. My head was doing loops so I took it pretty easy. Swapped boards with creek and could hardly stand on his Alana. Finally managed to catch a few and had fun surfing it but it killed me in the bumpy stuff inside. Foote is feeling good. Still getting it wired, needs a stomp pad and some pad up front. I think I'll do the stomp pad handle.
I'm going early to 1st beach tomorrow if anyone is going.

Most excellent times with BigFoote today... we had a nice session in head high surf,  pretty much all to ourselves.
Glassy with light offshores, not the mind numbing cold of the last 2 months...
3  hours till the setting sun said it was time to go.

I really enjoyed a session with Bob... been too long. He looked at home and super well matched to his big Foote.
He was nabing a lot of waves. One in particular.... I thought he was way to far back and waited for the board to fly up into the air, instead I saw Bob come flying up the shoulder then bank off the top.... inside as the wave closed out I saw him almost pull off a nice lip floater but the wave mushed and left him in mid air.

We swapped boards for 1/2 hour, so I got a shot at the Big Foote.  super stable... nice relaxing board. Meanwhile Bob was cursing my board ;D ;D ;D I loved watching my board dump him!
Now I don't feel so bad when I fall over.

So... the Foote. Not a super wave catcher but I enjoyed the hell out of it.... it is a very smooth ride.... and it forces me to slow down.
I constantly tell myself to "slow down, smooth out" finesse, not brut force... the Foote did that for me automatically.
Pono was whispering in my ear.... get back on the tail.... so I did.
Very crisp and effective turns with ease... I was able to carve nice S turns down the line and hold nice speed.
I got my best wave backside and it really turned on, with my heels on the rail... great thrust off the bottom and smooth off the top and in cutbacks.... it finished well.... it carves over the shoulder and glides toward the outside and the stability makes it smooth as silk.
I reluctantly gave Bob his board back.
My bottom line.... the Foote rail turns very nicely for a 34" board... my favorite feature is that it smoothed me out and made me more deliberate... I'm a little too amped on my smaller or narrower boards because I can manhandle them, this one required foreplay.

Here's a picture I took of the conditions before we went out.
