Sup Leash Belt
« on: March 19, 2015, 12:35:54 PM »
I've been thinking about leashes.
Goodfornuthin has a Safety Belt that he attaches his leash to.
He said it works wonders and he surfs the big stuff...

So I am doing this...

Sup Leash Belt

I used a belt today with the leash cuff around it in the back.

I have been abusing my leash leg for years now.
Thought I'd give it a try.

Interesting..

The leash stays out of the way for the most part.

Didn't step on the leash, get my paddle tangled in it,
have to readjust its position.

I can freely swim without the anchor on my leg.

When the leash pulls, my head is generally above water
instead of being dragged underwater...

Leash pull on the mid section felt dispersed.

I'm going with it...

You want one?

These will be available for $20.00 Ea

Good idea to include the D ring as it makes the belt useful in conjunction with a quick release shackle for white water.

I'm quite curious to hear Pros & Cons of using a belt vice attachment to either ankle or calf.  Specifically with respect to SUP surfing.

Couple of quick questions/comments I have are:
- certainly would appear to solve tripping or getting leash in feet when crosswalking on board,
- the leash is effectively shortened a couple of feet going from ankle to waist.....more prone for head whacks?
- as related to previous bullet, great possibility to leash wrap around head?
- granted, this is likely best option for those with back ankles or knees and have no other option.

Gotta be something behind big wave riders using these, but for rookies like me in only 2-4' stuff I question advantage.

Getting the leash yanked up around the family jewels is not appealing

If you had to release the leash, say if it got tangled around a rock or something, I would think it would be much easier with the waist leash than an ankle or calf leash, could be a lifesaver in that case.

My concern is what about a really hard yank tweaking your back.  Bending you in ways you don't want to bend.  Seems like a vulnerable position for your lower back.

I have used a scuba diving weight belt (with out the weights) and attached a standard lease the same way Sup-position does and it works quite well. It also would release very easily if need be.

This is somewhat of a rehashed topic but I like it!!!!

The answer is a Crow Haley leash.  But this may be timely because apparently Crow has been hard to get in touch with and get leashes from, so maybe you (Sup-position) can take his place.

For starters in anything over 9 ft I think you guys are crazy to use an ankle leash.  This schematic shows what it is like when you get dragged with a waist leash.

You will be FACE UP.   When you get good you actually anticipate the pull and articulate your body.  When the board starts to pull, and you are deep in the cauldron, you just wait, wait, wait then arch your back and the board will ROCKET YOU TO THE SURFACE.  When you are being pulled by a really big wave you can actually start planing backwards which should relieve the stress on the leash.

I have not broken a leash in 2 years.  Extra long leashes, 20 ft, seem to work well to absorb the impulse from big waves.  They just need to stretch for a long enough time duration for the hell to pass.

And the safety release mechanism.

I added this chicken loop sewn on to the Velcro.  It used to be sewn on the pull tab, but the pull tab ripped off easily.  The loop is key because you will never find that little tab in a panic.  I nearly drowned being bashed on the rocks, prior to chicken loop, and couldn't get my leash off.

YES IT DOES

LEASH IS THE SAME LENGTH, JUST ATTACHED TO YOUR WAIST IN BACK.

- as related to previous bullet, great possibility to leash wrap around head?
HOW SO ANY MORE THAN USUAL?

- granted, this is likely best option for those with back ankles or knees and have no other option.
AGREED.

PULLS FROM THE BACK..IF IT WAS PULLING FROM THE FRONT, THAT WOULD BE THE CASE.

THANK YOU, RALPH  Beasho clears that up and it does seem like a great thing, now that I understand.  Especially if it tends to help you get to the surface when you are being pulled.
