There's a point to this question.

I tried it first when I was in the Navy, going to Basic Electronics School in San Diego. I'd walk over the hills to the beach and rent a board. No leash, no wax. Lots of swimming and flailing, but I did it as often as I could and made some progress. Fast forward about 20 years. I'd been windsurfing in the Gorge and Maui for 10 years, but I tore up my rotator cuffs playing rollerblade hockey. Couldn't windsurf, so I started longboarding for rehab. Oregon coast and then Maui. So I started at about 20 but got real at 40--about 1988.

1970 at 10yo in Atlantic Beach New York. The board was a longboard cut in half called a pig shape that the lifeguards let me use. I couldn't get my arm around it and had to drag it to the water. By this time I had already been wave riding on mats.

drop knee mat rider at 10 yo--obsessive--sheets of sunburn blisters on arms shoulders face often--save melanoma risk for another thread

LB off and on (more off than on) over the years

heavy WS (much as possible in NR) through the 90's

stand up last 3 years

LB early 2000's

mixed in some knee board and sponge over the years, too

surfing better than ever on stand up--nice to be loving a sport, and improving, at age 56

sports i "excelled" at when much younger, i can still enjoy, but the objective is to fail less, where i will never play like i did as a 20 year old.

1981. Jersey Island. (UK). Spent a week paddling out and didn't catch a single wave. Got hooked on windsurfing instead and never tried surfing again until I bought a Surf SUP in Bali 4 years ago.

I first tried it in when I was seven years old in 1964 at the Wall in NH. My brother put me his big Kailua log and launched me toward shore on a knee high wave.

We did that for two summers. Mostly I watched and learned. Then my brother joined the navy in '67. Those years really affected me. He left me with a stack of the original surfer magazines that I wish I still had.

I was hooked but unfortunately didn't surf again until 1975 when I was 18. I spent a good part of that summer surfing longboards in Florida at Cocoa Beach. That's where I really learned to surf.

After that, the years went by but life's interferences and a lack of money kept me from surfing, although I continued to follow the sport closely.

I got into windsurfing from '78 to '83 but didn't get to explore the surf aspect.

Fast forward to 2013. Now I'm 56. If I was going to do it, it had to be now. I was just about to start shopping for a longboard when I noticed some paddleboarders having a ball at a distant point break. Right then it clicked in my mind that this was a better way to surf.

Now a year and a half and five boards later, I finally have the full on surf stoke I was hoping for. It has changed my life immensely for the better.

When it comes down to it I've really only been surfing for a year and a half even though surfing has been a part of me my entire life.

I started in 1980 and I still remember the feeling of the first, open faced wave I ever caught like it was yesterday.  At the end of the wave I'm sure I said something to myself like, 'I will never stop doing this.'  And I was right.  I get the same feeling every time I drop in to a wave 35 years later.

At age 8 in 1969 on a surf mat; didn't get my own surfboard until 1974.  Mostly short-boarding through 2004, switched to longboard and finally added SUP in 2010.

40 yrs ago at Poche beach on a Tom Sutherland 6' pintail that I traded for a skateboard and some golf clubs. I had a blue and yellow surf mat before that.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.
