Fat tails n McCoy boards for SUP
« on: March 05, 2015, 11:46:00 AM »
I have built a few SUPs and all have wide fat tails.. I am just a backyard hack, but I do have fun..

Anyway.  I used to surf McCoy prone boards for years.  They are really wide tailed boards (up to 20" tails) that force you to surf off the back foot.  Man, those boards really improved my surfing.. So, my SUPs have wide tails and they surf great up to a point.

When I get the wide tails in bigger 3 to 4' over head stronger surf, I always blow out the tails in cutbacks.  My tails are up to 22" wide, and I used McCoys theory on wide tails( I have shared a few emails with Geoff in the past and he gave me good tips)

Long story short.  Almost the same tails with my McCoys and SUPs and my McCoys love big juicy surf and I never blew out tails.  I use his rolled vee bottoms and softer tucked rails on my SUPs so what gives?

Any thoughts?

I know for sure if I have a 16" to 17" pulled in round pintail, the boards will handle big waves much better..

My Jammer design is loosely based off the McCoy/ Cheyne Horan Lazor Zap and Nugget...
I never blow my tail out on a cutback...on the Jammer...or, any of my SUP board designs...my newer Jammer design with the stepped rails has even more bite...;-)

Never have spun out bottom turning front or backside on bigger waves, either...I can turn at will anywhere on the wave face...
I think it has a lot to do with fin placement...fin design...and, also paddle usage...paddle being the biggest fin on your board...then, board design itself...

I would ask if you are using a small center trailer?
I am on bigger waves...it helps with rail to rail transition in quad mode...

Wardog, do you take out the center StubNub in smaller or mushier surf?

Yes...usually...but, you can also ride it as a twin in small/weak conditions...
There's a local guy who has been on one of my Jammers for several years and he will even ride his finless...or, tiny StubNubs in the front boxes...
I need to get some GoPro footage of Bill...he's quite the trickster on the Jammer...;-)

Coming down the home stretch...your Jammer will be at our shop tomorrow...

Agreed Tom...I don't find a down side to running my 2.25" or 3.19" StubNub along with my 5"/4" quad combo...

As I've said before...I think of these wide tailed boards as two side by side twin fins...the StubNub helps facilitate going from one rail to the other...

Cool!  I'll be at your shop the next day, Saturday.  Gotta be there right at opening and then rush off to Fillmore.

1. What time is the earliest I can come?
2. Will there be someone there who can help me put on the deck pad?

Thanks

I kind of figured it would be in the fins. I have glass ons my Simsup copy but was thinking of glassing on a small center fin... But hey, my McCoys are singles and my 10' wide tail is a single and it still pops out when I go aggressive cutbacks on bigger waves.   Hard edge on tail doesnt start until the middle of the fin and back to the tail, forward of fin is soft tucked edge..

Wardog, me loving my McCoys, I am drawn to your Jammer, it looks like my kind of stick.. Do you think its a all around board for big n small waves?

Absolutely, bro...no doubt...haven't found it's limiting parameter yet...if you know how to really surf...this board design will not hold you back...;-)

I've got a number of guys on 4-5 year old Jammers around here...and, they are so smitten with them that in spite of the significant improvements that I've made on the design...they are still content...and, I'm OK with that...good design is good design...;-)

Yeah...when you said that you are talking to Geoff...I figured there could be an issue with fin stuff...no disrespect...but, he is not designing SUP's...the tails and volumes are significantly greater...

More to the point...we've learned quite a bit about fin design and placement...etc...in the decades since Cheyne's run at it...and, if I may be so bold to say it...even a set of RTM quads on his McCoy Lazor Zaps prolly would have earned him the World Title...BLASPHEMY!...yeah, prolly so...but, it's the truth...;-)

BTW, these pics below are at La Roca on my 9'6" Stoke...no tail blowout...legit layback...

ColdSup

Never sell that McCoy, it will be collectors items one day, and its one of the best boards made, period..

I used to surf potato chip boards my whole life and me being a big guy, I wore out my shoulders paddling thin under-foamed boards at all the big points in Mexico.  Once I found McCoys, I was catching more waves, paddling easier, getting pitted deeper and just all around great fun.. Highly underrated boards...
