Hey, Lockie, remind me never to lend you my board.

Now, what was the wave that broke the 12'6" board, overhead or double overhead?

Typical GoPro wave footage. I got some video I expected to be great of some 9-14 foot (Hawaiian) stuff this winter. Solidly 2.5 to 3X OH, but clean and very ride-able. When I looked at the video it looked like I was in baby waves. Serious bummer. The only thing that looks big on a GoPro is Peahi or any tube ride.

This is a nose mount shot and I love it!  Hey if you have some nice footage please post. The educated eye will be able to appreciate.  I've been getting skunked this winter and going thru withdrawals.

That's amazing footage of a really good surfer killing it on a 12-6.  I love taking race/cruisers into the waves, but never in anything over 4 foot.  Looks well overhead on that day.

Lock, do you have any recommendations on bottom contours, nose shapes etc to look for in picking a surfing 12-6?  I think I've seen other vids with you on SupAtxs.
Also, what fin do you use, and do you prefer to have it forwards or back in the slot?

Hi Raf, my main advice for a 12'6 that can surf well is that it needs to have a harder bottom edge through the last 1/4 of the board's tail which is much the same concept as you get in a normal surf board. This helps give it a bit more purchase through the turn. With regards to the fin set up I may be a bit different than some of what is common amongst many paddlers but I have found that I like a good old fashioned 10" Dolphin Fin FCS Fluid Foils. I have mucked around with many others but have allways come back to this. I woould use the same type of fin on a surfing mal and I genrally have it positioned in the middle of the fin box.

Re the size I think it was somewhere around head and half high but there were a few double overhead sets further up the point. I was just warming up with a bit of shoulder hoping on the first few before I pushed up a little deeper to test things out a bit more. More than the height of the wave it was the power of the cyclone swell which meant they had a bit more water in each wave.

Looks like there is another all time cyclone swell coming late next week.

Anyone want to lend me a board???

Cheers Lockie

Wow, you really surfed that racer well. I can't imagine handling a board like that in size. Too bad on snappin' it. You looked pretty bummed. Understandable. I woulda been on my 8'0" Assassin for ease of maneuverability.
btw- howdya get "Voodoo Child" on Vim? Everytime time try to upload a vid w/third party copyrighted jams I get deee-nied!

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Ok beasho....thanks!.....this thread has me pulling out old photo albums
You are spot on, Heron Island is an amazing place, it is one of the world's principal coral reef research stations
I am soooo glad that the cyclone did not reach that little piece of sea level paradise.

Snorkeling untouched reefs, watching sea turtles lay their eggs
and living on Gilligan's Island with a slew of  Mariannes, drinking Kamikaze's  ;)

Creek, great pictures. The stuff you pull out of your closet always amazes me. Nice fanny pack by the way. And looks like you were the original pioneer of "selfies", who knew?!

I can't even get any proners to come out.  However I NEVER GET SKUNKED.

I was out the other day that was so bad it would make a billy goat puke.  I almost turned back with my tail between my legs and went for a run then I said "F- that.  I moved to California to be near the surf and I don't care if its 4 feet at 5 seconds and freezing (like 48 degrees  8)) I am going surfing."

I felt like I was getting stalked at one point and then saw this bugger with beady little eyes.  'Like a doll's eyes.'

Today was a little better.  If that day was a 2/10 today was like a 5.5 / 10.

Things started out horrible.  Rigged up the electric bicycle and it started grinding.  WTF.  Then I realized it had a broken axle.  What!  How does an axle snap sitting in the garage?

So I grabbed an alternate set of wheels and headed to my neighborhood beach (that usually isn't great).

Still no one out.  Just me and the fishes . . . . so to speak.

The beady eyes are one thing I haven't seen much this year so far.

When I first went out on the ocean two years ago, the beach was punctuated with seal's heads poking out at regular intervals along the water at all times. Not so this year.

I saw the first one in a long time yesterday.  I wonder where they went, must be good eating somewhere else along the coast.

"Freezing"  Ha !!!   I remember  having dinner in New York for work , watching (being forced to watch rather) the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, on 15 Feb, having a kanipshin looking at the weather thinking " that's where I need to be right now"

Better Doll's eye than the man in the suit....

New York!  New York la la la  . .

I used to live on 81st and Amsterdam.  Would take me 2 hours to get from my apartment to the water in Sandy Hook, NJ or Heckscher state park in L.I.  Then I moved to Never Never Land.

In Never Never land we worry about our e-bike breaking down forcing me to take the electric cart 3 minutes to the water where our only friends our dolphins and the biggest worry is crust on the GoPro lens.

Good stuff here, I love the committed pull-in on the 12-6.  Until the final scene, I had no idea that was a race board.
