Nice Board Snap
« on: March 03, 2015, 03:54:40 PM »
“You may have seen that recently in Queensland Australia that we have some amazing surf thanks to Cyclone Marcia. Here is a short clip I thought you and the viewers might get a laugh from of one of my (mis)adventures on my 12’6 race board during this swell. I’m not sure how the board will go as a 6’3″ Jon Locke

PS:  Yes I did notice the Cyclone.  I (Beasho) was 40 miles off the coast of Gladstone with my family on a little coral atoll 3 feet above sea level.  Went to bed with a Cyclone warning and woke up with Cyclone Marcia <100 miles away having escalated to a Category 5 with evacuation "Not a possibility."   That'll get your attention.  Fortunately the storm made landfall and dissipated leaving us with less injury than this guy.

Wow, that's amazing. The surf really didn't look big enough to snap a board like that. I'm still surprised water can snap them like that to begin with.

Its actually motivational to know that you can carve a 12' 6" like that.

Here is a snapshot of where we were the morning of 2/20.  Slightly altered path and it could have been a vastly different story.  The island was less than 1/10 sq mile.  Were were in lockdown in the bar, all boarded up, and apparently the Aussies have a rule 'No alcohol will be served when things hit category 5'  Who'd of thought?

Au contrair mr cheat.... he surfs that raceboard at "the Alley" in some pretty big waves..... and rips them on his 12'6, I might add. Those waves were probably close to DOH. That was an impressive tube he committed to before the big bang theory got his board.

beasho..... holy crap! That is horrifying... with your family in the path of a category 5 with nowhere to run, nowhere to hide???? Man, you are a lucky boy. That is a scary scenario. I am wicked glad you didn't have to stare that down.

I spent a few awesome days on Heron Island, so I know there isn't any shelter from a storm in that neighborhood.

Small world indeed.  Here she was in 1984 when I last visited as a kid with my parents.

And like a turtle I returned to Heron Island 31 years later to what I came to realize was my favorite place on earth.

'No alcohol will be served when things hit category 5'  Who'd of thought?

Reassuring to know even the Aussies have their limits when it concerns drinking alcohol.
157 mile an hour winds is at least a start.

While on Heron Island, I took the liberty of introducing the entire staff to the joys of a new drink at the time:
the "Kamikaze" .... yowza..... it was a good night!

The day I left, I was given the co-pilots seat in the helicopter in recognition of my corruption of the chambermaid staff.

The ban on alcohol may have something to do with that night ;)

alittle gorilla glue and a band of carbon and that board will be good as... well, good as a busted board can be.

Typical GoPro wave footage. I got some video I expected to be great of some 9-14 foot (Hawaiian) stuff this winter. Solidly 2.5 to 3X OH, but clean and very ride-able. When I looked at the video it looked like I was in baby waves. Serious bummer. The only thing that looks big on a GoPro is Peahi or any tube ride.

Maybe Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" would have been better.

^ Voodoo Child lyrics were just perfect. That was awesome footage.

Sorry to hear no Hurricane shots on hand. I thought they were mandatory as of Cat4.

Ok beasho....thanks!.....this thread has me pulling out old photo albums
You are spot on, Heron Island is an amazing place, it is one of the world's principal coral reef research stations
I am soooo glad that the cyclone did not reach that little piece of sea level paradise.

Snorkeling untouched reefs, watching sea turtles lay their eggs
and living on Gilligan's Island with a slew of  Mariannes, drinking Kamikaze's  ;)

I'm glad a few of you have enjoyed some amusement at my expense :)

I have given that board a hiding over the last few years before she was put to rest in the long right hand pointbreak in the sky. It was not pleasant news to have to break to my wife and she will be deducting it from my pocket money for years to come.

She was even less impressed when I had to call her again a couple of hours later to let her know that her favourite 9' surfing mal had also been put to rest in the long right hand pointbreak in the sky  :'(

For Richer or For Poorer
Cheers, Lockie
