Deck Patch
« on: February 26, 2015, 03:06:11 PM »
Has anyone vacuum bagged a wood veneer on the deck as a patch and to reduce heel dents?  I've used 6oz carbon w 2 layers  4 oz s glass layers and it works, but I have enough Ash veneer leftover to do a vacuum bag deck patch.  My main concern is will it be as effective as the carbon with 2 layers of 4oz s glass ? I'm using 1.5# eps.
Thanks

I've vacuum bagged a couple of wood veneers on the deck that haven't dented yet. (Year)  I don't own the boards but I see them regularly. 4oz Sglass, wood, 4oz Sglass.

These days I use one layer of 14 oz S-glass from Thayercraft as a deck patch.  Works wonders.

I did a 14' carbon race board over about 1.6 lb foam (they call it 1.5 but I measured more).  I did 6oz carbon, then bamboo veneer, then 6oz E glass over the standing area.  I also added an extra layer of 6 oz carbon where my feet are for 90% of my paddling (about 1 foot long under the deck pad) and added 3 more feet of 6oz E behind that where I would be stepping back on the board less often.  I'm about 160 lbs, and do not have any dents at all.

How thick is your veneer? I think its the thickness thats most important.
Glass, veneer, glass. Its a sandwich. ash is hard so it wont dent.

My bamboo was just measured and I get it at about 0.5mm, but I think in theory many veneers come in a "standard" 1/42", which equates to 0.6mm.  But maybe I'm splitting hairs here!  I got some 4'x8' sheets which came to about $30 each after lots of hunting around.  I got mine from www.bamboohardwoods.com a couple years ago, but when I look at their website now, I only see flooring....
