Great information- we get asked that all the time and it is different for each airline.  It's a good idea to compare the board policy before booking a flight if you plan to bring a board.

Thanks for the helpful post.

I posted a few weeks ago that the American Express platinum card offers an annual $200 credit towards baggage fees or ticket changes.  It's a great perk to help pay for board fees.  I Took advantage of this benefit  last month on American Airlines.  Paid the board fee at the airport with the card and the $150 credit was on my statement the following week.
Hobie Raw 8'10"
Jimmy Lewis Kwad 8'7"
Naish Hover 95 liter 5'7"
F-One Rocket foil board 5'5" 90 liters
Fanatic Aero 1250, 1500, 1750 HA foils
CabrinhaMantis 3.5, 4m 5m. F-One Strike 7m CWC
Hobie 14' race board

Carib,

That $200 credit is per year, so if you used 150 on that flight you will only have $50 of credit for the rest of the year. A lot depends on the person at the counter who checks you in. American charged me $35 to fly my 8"11 sup to Hawaii, and $150 to fly a six foot board my daughter bought while we were there back home.

i hear you--tho when i fly, i am paranoid that my gear won't make it, so i try to play by the rules--were i just moving a board somewhere for a "season", where having it ultimately arrive a few days after i do would be nbd, i would try to use curbdside check or wherever best chance to be undercharged would be--but last trip, for ex, was to nicaragua for a week, where there were no rentals--

of course i brought ding repair kit, spare leash and strings, spare paddle, fins, etc

anything fails that you cant repair, youre stuck proning on a beater
