The Wifey would move back to RI in a heartbeat....
« on: February 16, 2015, 04:57:30 AM »
.....and I think I could be talked into it pretty easily.

She grew up in Newport about a 5 min walk from 1st Beach and still has a lot of family in Newport, Middletown, and over in Narragansett.  We visit for a couple of weeks each summer and that's where I get the bulk of my SUP surfing in (1st and 2nd Beaches).  We're in Annapolis, MD these days which actually reminds us of Newport quite a bit (minus the mansion's on Bellevue Ave).  Anyway, we're already talking about looking around Middletown on the first visit this year....could be interesting!

It's a Zonerfest in Newport every swell.... you'd know everyone in the water ;-)

Nice town... hard to go wrong in that neighborhood.
Great surf and paddling.... and snow.

Like you say... Annapolis is quaint and pretty.... but a long way from the surf.

afaik, the closest surf to where you are now is rehoboth beach, de, (where i grew up) and let me tell you, RI (where I live now) has it beat by a long shot.  100% better surf and 80% less summer traffic.  what's not to like?

STC: "Zonerfest"  who here from the forum is typically out there.  On any given day last year (even ankle slapper days) when I was out there was maybe half a dozen SUP'ers max.  Always super friendly and great vibe.  On better days it was pretty easy to pickup the proners disapproval but always plenty of space to spreadout.

Linter: Where in RI do you live?  I was under the impression you were a SoCal Zoner?

Ake:  You're probably right!  I suspect this winter could very well be the last for those seniors who've been on the edge about heading south to set up camp!

Best not to disparage SENIORS on this forum.
Some might take offense at that term  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Dang...that's a bunch of folks...I'm sure I've been in the water with some of these folks.  Everyone I've said hello too has been very friendly and always a great vibe in the water.  I'll need to make it a point and extend the secret Zoner handshake........but first ya'll have to let me in on it!

STC:  "Clairvoyant"....nope not a Nostradamus type!

I can't bust on "seniors" as I am one!  AARP card-carrying member for 3 years and counting!

The Zoner handshake?  Drop-in on the other guy, then give the "kook glare".  ;)

Linter:  What town in RI are you in?  As mentioned, I thought I read you were out in SoCal as I seem to recall you mentioned you go out at Tourmaline quite a bit (I'll actually be there next weekend for a weeks worth of worth in La Jolla.... I LOVE Tourmaline and hope to get out a few times!)....I digress.

I leave RI for the winter.  Just too damned cold, with too much damned snow.  Last year, I went to MX.  This year, I'm in Pacific Beach / SD, with Tourmaline being the closest spot.  The only thing the waves here have over the ones in RI is consistency; think I've been in the water six days out of 7 for the past two months, which would be impossible back home.  In terms of the quality/shape of the wave, RI blows this place away.  IMHO.  If only RI was warmer, I'd never leave.  Sigh.

Oookay.  So with all the coastline in San Diego, Tourmaline is the only place you're comparing to RI?

well, no, actually.  i also include san o, cardiff, pipes and terra mar (though not the left at mission beach jetty -- wow!).  RI's breaks are all better.  i believe kayyadog thinks the same.
