What is Annabel Talking About?

In an interview in SUP the Mag, Annabel is asked about BoP at Salt Creek, and it is apparent that there is some sense of ill-feeling. Obviously due to the organisers' idiotic and myopic decision not to provide a webcast, we didn't get to see the event, and all post race discussion was dominated by the Connor/Kai skirmish. So what is Annabel talking about? Was there some other incident in her own race that we didn't hear about?

How did the Battle of the Paddle affect you going into 2015? Did the way it all finished at Salt Creek affect you going into the new year?

Battle is one event a year and I treat it as such. As any winner of Battle will tell you; if you’ve won it – you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. It’s just that kind of event.

To know that I have consistently lined up and put myself on the podium or challenged for the win for four consecutive years is what I take away from it.

I can’t control how event directors choose to execute their event, I can’t control the actions of others, all I can control is what I do and to roll with the punches as they are thrown.

While Battle is important, I am not solely defined by a single event or result. Quite simply, it’s water off a duck’s back.

No idea, she seemed to be upset all weekend.

She was penalized after the race (hours later) just before the awards. If you look at any pictures, she is wearing sunglasses on the stage even though it was dark out and the sun had set. She found out about the penalty just before the elite awards and I heard that she broke down. She passed one of the final buoys on the wrong side and therefore got bumped from 2nd to 3rd. Also, she was leading in the final stretch to the beach but fell on a set wave and broke her leash about 100 yds out. She had to swim in. Candace was behind her on a wave and surfed to victory. Rough ending for Annabel and the penalty was just salt in the wound.

Everything I've learned about the event has come via second- and third-hand sources, i.e. forums and blogs, but I remember someone saying that her passing the buoy on the wrong side was a disadvantage, which made the late penalty an even harsher blow.

Yeah I heard the same thing. I also heard that the officials changed the women's course setup at the last minute and the new layout wasn't very clear.
