Cold weather flatwater training pant?
« on: January 29, 2015, 02:30:15 PM »
Splash and wind resistant, semi-breathable, not too hot?

NRS Hydroskin?
splash pants + capilene?
insulated compression tights + board shorts?

Got a favorite?

Looks unconventional, but Creek and StoneAxe swear by these.

Not so breathable but I just bought a cheap Body Glove wetsuit and cut the top off.

My combo is a "farmer john" 3mm wetsuit and a Bluesmiths long sleeve loose top and wetsuit booties. The farmer john wetsuit has a zip up the front that I can unzip if I'm hot. The Bluesmiths top is wind proof and repels water well if I happen to take a dip. My flat water is in the ocean so we get the occasional boat wake and I like ultra near coastal cruising and so sometimes I catch a fin and get tossed off. This combo is a safer option for me. If I were on a lake with little chance of falling in I'd wear what I wear for a run in cold weather.

I like these:

http://supremepaddle.com/product/mens-contour-platinum-polyolefin-pants/

So far that's the most I've needed to wear this winter (but I don't think there's been a morning here in SB where it's dipped below 40F.  Even if it did, I get hot pretty quickly so even if it's a little chilly I can overheat pretty quickly.  I don't end up in the water much, but they do keep me warm for the little bit I get wet on launch and landing.  If you're in a cold water locale, I'd be comforted knowing they'll provide a measure of protection if you fall in and have a long paddle back home.

They do make a 1.5 neoprene but if you're not going in the water I think that can even get a bit hot.

Been having success with SeasonFive Barrier pants, much more breathable than neoprene.  Hydroskin is great, too, but neoprene is neoprene and it's better for when you're in the water than for when you're "on" the water.

Agree completely, and since I'm mostly not in the water in the winter, I love me my Hydroskin!

Iceboating -back in the day- or bike riding on really cold days, some thermals with wind pants over are wonderful. I have a pair of NIKE that are noisy but kill the windchill and are loose enough to not make the fleece underneath feel clammy.    ..local water temps of 34-36f. prevent me from testing this with SUP.

I second the Season5 sportswear.
Love my Season5 Phantom zip long sleeve Mock turtle top - extremely breathable and flexible.  Wear it by itself in winter when flat water paddling or over top my wetsuit while surfing to cut the wind.

I find these are great. Wear whatever you want underneath. They have attached socks, so slip on a pair of booties and you can wade in, staying totally dry.
