Hey... I made the raks for $40, and built them into a $2,000 van, not a $30,000 truck and I'm the show off?  ;D ;D ;D

SIC X-14 Pro on Pegasus (Hybrid v60 D6) crossing Holland's afsluitdijk on our way to SUP11CityTour 220km race last September.

You guys think its ok to stack 3 boards on my car for a 'long road trip?? 2x 14'0 and 1x 12'6
Thinking how to stack them safely without damaging the boards. They'd all be in boardbags.

Take a look at La Perouse Bay's post on the previous page.  I sense you're going to need wider bars, with a "side by side" strategy. Another option is to rent a truck or van.

Thanks for that suggestion Slatch. Gonna have to look around and see if there's such option (probably from Thule) to mount on top of this car model. If all fails, I might have to resort as you suggested.

my J racks shortened width to fit these hollow boards. Pictured here is just a test. I eventually had to place the boards facing each other(highway winds).

Very interesting. It looks like you’re using kayak J racks. Is this correct? It also shows that you’re using a front tie down like you would with a kayak. Did you put something onto the nose of the board to give you a point to use the tie down?

Have you ever used these J Racks for your boards without the front tie down? If so, did you think the boards were stable enough at say highway speeds?

Am curious because I don’t believe I’ve seen someone do this before and would like to know how well it works. Thanks.

That j-cradle kayak carrier set up looks scary to me. Honestly I don't think that is a good idea.

Just some quick background, J racks were designed so kayaks could be transported on their sides.  The bottoms and top decks of many poly kayaks are not rigid enough for flat transport but the sides are.

But hey, if you find the racks to be convenient for SUP, why not?

I've thought about using kayak stackers for getting more stuff on my roof, and I'd also like to be able to open my rear gate with a board on the roof. Would need some good padding to make sure nothing gets dinged up.

No reason why you couldn't use regular rack pads with the vertical "stacker" (on the rack and on the vertical)...

Yeah, I might wrap the stacker in pool noodle, and use a cushy piece of foam for where the rail meets the bar, but my boards are kind of soft. I'd imagine a lot of pressure where the rail meets the bar, maybe not the best way to transport.

That kayakstacker seems like a good idea for 3 boards sandwich (laid on its rails). Haven't seen one here. How solid is that pole mount?

It's solid. Would take a lot of force for it to fail. And most of them fold down nicely when not in use. The stacker is there to keep things upright on the rack, and to provide a point of contact for the straps when you tie it all down. The weight of everything riding on top is transferred to the bars. I think padding the bars where the rails meet would be key, so you don't damage the boards. Might be a little more wear and tear on the boards than riding flat, but good pads should help.
For the setup on your wagon, you might try removing the fins and stacking them up top. As long as you're not exceeding the rack weight limit I think you should be okay. Just use some good padding to make sure nothing gets dinged up, be smart strapping it down without over tightening it, and I bet you could get all three up there.
