Hey guys,

I asked about seeing sharks up in Jalama so I thought I'd share my story. Two weeks ago a buddy and I made it up to Jalama.

While day dreaming I came too when the largest fin I have ever seen emerged just past the break. It had to have been close to 3 feet tall by 2 feet wide. It began to thrash around and make quite the commotion before diving deeper and disappearing from my sight. (It never came up for air) My buddy called me a kook and dismissed it as an orca. I approached the ranger and he said he has never seen an Orca at Jalama in the years he has worked there.

I lived in Malibu on and off from the mid fifties to the mid seventies - full time in the sixties. In the mid sixties my buddies and I had a friend who gave us easy access anytime we wanted - from Jalama down to Hollister.
Truly a beautiful spirit world unto itself. Thing was, back then it was the golden era of surfing (to say nothing of sex, drugs, rock & roll:) so living in Malibu with all the incredible breaks there and close by, we preferred to stay put for the most part.

That said, Jalama was pure magic. And yes, we saw Killer whales there not infrequently. Same off Malibu. That huge dorsal was unmistakable. We loved being in the water when they were swimming north or south just outside the surf line. Always felt they brought us good luck...

Jalama “land of changing wind” picked up that hella Southerly swell the last few days…pics don't do it justice...ginormous sets...massive current and vortices...surfed by myself with serious consequences...no takers...the inside break was mean as it gets...lucky I made it out and back in unscathed...

Photog didn't get that many crisp shots of my rides because too low to water level...focus sensor mostly grabbed closest whitewater...but, you get the idea...

Looks like you had a Mouthie.

I am afraid to ask if there were any good pics.  I know that those things do even LESS justice to stuff like that.

Brad at Arroyo Laguna SUP/sailing on the same day.
It takes a quiver to do that.

We camped at Jalama a couple times with surfboards and windsurfers ready to go but both times it was nuking with victory at sea conditions and totally disorganized with a huge gnarly shorebreak. (I think I would have needed a 3.0 sail!) It was too out of control to go out but we had a great time anyway. It was so windy that our little 4 man dome tent was getting blown flat from the gusts while we were in it! I heard the little hamburger joint there is pretty good and I'll bet the fishing is good. You'll see the most beautiful countryside on your drive in from the highway too. So good surf or not, it's a great place to explore.
