Who cares what you look like?  You are having a blast and that's what counts.  Impressing people is overrated.

Which contradicts Billy Crystal's famous line.  "it's more important to look marvelous than feel marvelous."  Of course satirically saying the same thing as ZOOport

Its not about what the other guys think I look like, its about me wanting to look better, I realize that seems so trivial considering that my only complaint in life is that I wish I look better on the waves.

Whether one likes it or not, it is an exhibitionistic sport for better or worse.  Unless you are by yourself somewhere with just the gulls and the fishes.

Watching people strut and preen coming in and out of the water just seems to emphasize it, and there is a bit of theater in the way people fall off their boards, shoot the lip, play with their paddle etc. it can be kabuki stylized.

I can't help but notice people on the water watching me, but I would rather not know what they are thinking.  "What a waste of waves"  "Who let the kooks out of the asylum" etc.

There is even a bit of dysfunctional imitation, and I suppose I am as guilty as anybody.

Cheat's right ..."Whether one likes it or not, it is an exhibitionistic sport for better or worse.  Unless you are by yourself somewhere with just the gulls and the fishes."

Both times are nice.  I love the quiet of back bays but remember the 'Cock walks' back up the beach carrying a big ass kite and my board walking by beached whales half my age feeling pretty good about myself.  WhyTF not.

SUPsurf however brings me back to 'full humble'.

The exhibitionist part is mitigated a bit here in Maui, where saying "yeah, I surf" is like saying "yeah, I breathe". But I know what you guys mean. Hearing 50 year old guys say "I'm too old for that" is music to my ears. A little bit of Schadenfreude (trust the Germans to have a word for that).

I'm afraid to see vid of me.  Especially on this new, tiny board.  I think I prefer to keep overly optimistic mental images and avoid the blazing light of truth.  :)
