So would we. It happens about once every couple of years. Lanes is the far west end of Ho'okipa and it's furthest from the wind shelter of the point that juts out behind pavilions--the furthest east break. The prevailing east winds hit it pretty solid so it almost always has deep grain. There's also the reef structure--it's a series of channels running out perpendicular to the beach--coral and rock channels that go all the way to sand and are overhung. If you get caught inside and pushed down you can get very snagged. I spent some anxious moments with my leash caught in those channels which always hangs in the back of my head when I surf there.

I love surfing there, but so do the regular surfers when it's good. If there's too many out at Lanes it's best to just give it a pass, there's only a few productive spots to line up.
