Great story Bill. What you described with the sunset sounds exactly like the day we were out at Kanaha back in 2008 with Bill and Jimmy Lewis....I really can still picture it.

Sue is gonna be pissed at you. I wasn't thinking of going so wide this time. You know I fell in love with the 9-10 and I've been thinking of having Bill shape me one very similar but I may give Rick Romano a call and use this as an excuse to finally go down and visit him this spring. Just read the Ponostyle post. Now I'm REALLY interested....the rails thinned out is one of the things I was going to look for in the next board and 174 liters isn't much for a board that length and width and fits my size pretty well.

I think I may actually have to sell a board or two and some other shite I'm not using or Sue will shoot me.

What sizes are they producing?  How's the weight?

I'll find out, his website sucks. Facebook isn't much better.

Ha!  It sure does.  I've emailed him with some questions.  Thanks for the great review.

I did some digging around the interweb to see if I could find anything else about them.  I found some stuff on Flight's Facebook page.

After I broke my board this is the one Bill Foote lent me to try, the same one, different color as PBill's magic board.

That just won't do!  Here's some pics Bill sent me.

The yellow one is his 8'10 x 29 3/4", 103 L production board.  It's a different shape than the 10' or 10'4 Triton.  Looks pretty sweet to me.

The blue one is either 10'4 x 34', 175 L or 10' x 32", 152 L.

From Bill:
My Tritons are my larger boards with flat bottom, squash tail, and slight vee in the tail. The smaller boards, 8'10'' and down are full concave to slight vee with double concave in the vee area, and swallow tails.

The shorter boards are particularly suited for quad fins, though 2+1 thruster is also excellent with these boards. The larger boards have squash tails to move some buoyancy and stability to the rear for better trimming and good release for heavier surfers. All the boards have deeply stepped rails and thinned out nose and tail for optimal carving and performance turns.

How are you liking it?  Does it have the same magic touch for you as it did for PBill?

Well my balance isn't the greatest at 64 but that board was super stable for me and despite the width, it performed fairly well, definitely fast.  But the width is two inches (32") wider than my old (30") board and if anything I wanted to push slightly slightly narrower.  So Bill lent me another one to try at 28.5".  It (9'6") was challenging when I first jumped on it in wind but I could do it. But yesterday in glass it was totally stable enough.  I think my width number is around 29 right now in that 9' range.  I'm 190.  But if you're young and fit you could go narrower.

Instant U Turn
« Reply #39 on: January 30, 2015, 03:06:55 PM »
I found something new this 10'4" lets me do that I haven't done before--instant U-turns. Not really a bottom turn. I found the button to do it by accident, but then I did about twenty of them in a row. I was going hard and high left from fairly far over on the right, but a guy pulled into the wave going right. So I stepped way back and leaned hard with the paddle jammed down, and the board flipped around the tail.

Wasn't really a turn, I reversed direction 180 degrees in less than a board length. No tricky balance required (I don't have any) no instability, just bam--go the other way.

The second one I tried I was too far down in the wave, so I just planed into a tight bottom turn. Next one I got high on the face and bam--180.

I don't know if this is just something any board can do and I've been missing it, or what. But it's pretty fun, and very useful.

Oh, and Bill, the board you tried is the 10' X 32". I tried that one too. I liked it, but it was a little unstable given it's size. The one I have is 10'4" X 34", which sounds ridiculous, but what a board.

Truth here:
Everybody has a different set of circumstances
Whats perfect for one, may not be appropriate for the next guy.

Lately I've seen a lot of pressure from the Zone crew to "Go shorter... narrower/wider... it's the ONLY answer"

This thread is a great example of the benefits of the "right" board for you.
When you find it, your surfing will magically step up a notch.

PB....I am more than super stoked that you sent one to BoB.... seems like a great match, he's gonna kill it on that board.... I'll bring my camera :D

Also I think the type of wave you ride matters.  For Lower Kanaha, wider is fine.  For some of the faster waves we have on the outer reefs, I've seen a penalty with more width.  But I saw PBill catch one this morning on that board and he looked great.  Definitely works for him.

Going to head out Saturday afternoon to see if the magic is there for me. Probably not fair to expect much. Last time on the water was early November and while the doc gave me the go ahead my arm still feels weak. Stoked to get out regardless. I need to start getting my head back in order. If the forecast holds up its supposed to be thigh high and clean at 12 secs. Should be good for a 1st test. I'm going to have to bring a lot of hot water with me...no doubt going to be in the water as much as on it.
