Cheap SUP Wheels
« on: December 22, 2014, 08:05:54 PM »
I thought others might be interested in the cool wheels I bought for toting my SUP.  Super cheap and sturdy.  It's made for kayaks but works fine on SUPs.  You can pull it by hand or on a bike.  I attach it to one of several of my boards using a nylon tie-down, and mostly tow them behind my bike for quick and easy transportation around Newport, where parking is sometimes difficult.  I am using it also when I go down to Trails where the trip down to the beach is quite a hike.

Looks good Zoo.

How do you attach, I assume the front of your board, to your bike?

I tried several different ways, and settled on putting the wheels on the tail and a stick-on leash plug on the nose of the boards I surf on.  The plugs also double as a GoPro tether.  I'll post a pic later today.

You can put the wheels on the nose of the board and use the regular leash plugs to attach to the bike, but it seems more secure with wheels attached to the tail because the strap is around the fins.

I've used that exact piece of gear for my kayaks for years.  What I like about it that's not evident in the photos is that the metal frame folds flat, so it's not bulky lashed to my kayak (or a board).  You can even take the wheels off if a few seconds.

I don't own a set of schlepping wheels yet.  Between this thread, the trails meetup potential in the future, the coming of summer along with the shutdown that happens at SanO, and Zoo's wheels, I have a raging debate in my own head on whether to build or buy a cart.

The cost difference is one thing but it may be negated by simple usefulness.  I won't argue that I'm a better designer or fabricator than ...well anyone alive. Certainly not better than a pro.  Zoo's wheels look very useful.

But as a internet surfer... i'm moderately capable, and I've found a source of axle assemblies and wheels that puts the overall materials at less than 50 with junk I have at home. At nearly the same price, whether it's worth the effort might be a push.

Strapped down to a supported board, foam protected with recycled scrap closed cell and duct tape.
Sometimes if it looks ghetto enough, people just leave it be.  ;)

Thanks Zoo for posting your pics.  That's still probably the best option (along with mules and Sup Wheels

Great deal thanks for posting!

If they do well in soft sand I'd get one just to haul my families crap down to the beach on my board.

Yeah, they do well enough in loose sand.  They have fairly wide, balloon style tires.  I love mine, and for $32, you can't go wrong.  They fold down pretty flat too.

Ordered, and thanks! Now I realize, I can still bike my board a mile to the marina, or a couple miles to the bay.
