Gear recommendations?
« on: December 22, 2014, 04:06:24 PM »
Got pulled over in the middle of San Diego Bay by the Harbor Police this morning. Told me if I wanna paddle out in the shipping lane, I need to have a PFD on board .
What PFD do you recommend? Is there one made specifically for SUP?
Other question...how to make a fore deck lash-down/gear holder on a 14' Glide?

Grem,

I got hassled by the SD Harbor Police for the same thing when SUPing SD Bay near the channel - however, they never bothered me when I windsurfed across the channel without a PFD...

To avoid the hassle, I ended up getting a PFD in a bag...$32.99 from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Rethreads-PFD-Bag-Backpack-Kit/dp/B007M5VLJK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419293661&sr=8-1&keywords=pfd+in+a+bag

When flat water SUPing in San Diego Bay, I usually launch from Grand Caribe Park in the Coronado Cays:

Less boat traffic and the Harbor Police are rarely seen in South San Diego Bay.

I use one of these when I'm paddling somewhere that PFDs are required.  It's pricey, but works great and you don't even know you have it on.  The funny thing is that the harbor patrol guys may not see it on you and pull you over anyway, but it is Coast Guard approved and they can't do a thing to you.

Grems,  X2 on the ONYX waist band.  Doesn't get in your way ..meets the regs.   Avoid drilled or epoxy deck mounts for your bungee cords - it might kill your resale if it is not a cargo board.  These work.  You might be able to get them off with dental floss ..but may pull paint if you have something like a Surftech.

Thanks Luca,
do they hold tight? And, can you remove them without damaging your board?

West Marine carries the belt pfd.  I imagine that any marine hardware store carries them.  Some SUP shops also carry them.
I used to wear one all the time.  Most of the time I forgot I had it on.  I've gotten back in my truck still wearing it.  Remember the law also requires a whistle.  They also are available at marine hardware stores.  My pfd has a small pocket that it fits into.

Many of the belt type inflatables also have the requires whistle inside.  You should unpack your PFD to get familiar with it.  They fold right back up.
