Surf Mat recommendation? (it's for my better half's B'day)
« on: December 17, 2014, 10:52:31 PM »
Hi all, like the title says. my wife wants a surfmat for her birthday, non of the local surf shop in my area carries any, so I'm gonna have to order online.

My wife (and me) are new to surf"mating". she's a good body boarder, grew up on the swim team and  body surfing in santa cruz. She's a lil out shape and carrying  lil extra pds from the birth of our second baby daughter but she's exited to get back in the water and ride waves again. before the baby she used to SUP surf, boogie board and hand plane (I married well!!..;)

We're ready to spend a lil $ to get the right thing, quick online search I came up with crypt and  4th gear flyer. Crypt comes in only 2 sizes and 4th gear has numerous size models. I have no idea really which, make, model, size would be the right for her.

Any recommendation, or advice would be much appreciated !

Thanks

A

4 th Gear made locally. Good descriptions of each mat, and Paul Gross is always willing to provide advice. I own a couple and have no complaints.

I have both Krypt and 4GF's in my quiver.  The Krypt are for more advanced riders, the 4GF's are more user friendly.  Their "channels" run much deeper than the Krypt giving you more directional control.

As far as the different models and sizes, I've used the standard, Tracker RT and the Omni of the 4GF's.  And honestly, there is little noticeable difference between them when riding IMO.  But I've heard the opposite from other riders.

The bodysurfing background will be a great advantage to riding the mat.  A bodyboarding background may not.  You ride a mat nothing like a bodyboard, and that's where most people get confused.

It's going to be a frustrating journey but the rewards when everything clicks is pretty awesome.

This is what I grew up with in the late 60's/early 70's until I graduated to actual surfboards.  I'm pretty sure everyone over the age of 50 who grew up along the beaches of SoCal will remember these.

That was the first tool I took out in the ocean.  Gulf Shores, AL.  60's.  I was a midwest boy and the ankle snappers knocked me around like a ragdoll.  lol.

My guess is the outboard is for the wave walk. on either side of the ob motor, you'll see a forest green hull.  thats from the wave walk.

i met the guy that invented this thing, back in 2000 or 2001 and got to demo the wave walk. you can paddle it sitting, standing or put a motor on it.  saw one in a pic that was posted of wardogs shop and just put 2+2 together.
