I hate to see people bail a board without even trying. There's a pretty decent woman surfer around here that dives off her board seemingly randomly. She bailed her board right in front of Boyum the other day, no regard for anyone's safety of convenience but her own. Next time I see her do it she's going to get an earfull.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

So what are you trying to say Pono? Don't follow too close behind women? Some reason I don't think any of the guys will step up to the plate and dish the earfull:)
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

It was a great chance for me to get up close and personal.  She was fit.  No problem getting around her but she was quite dramatic

Go out when its big and no one else seems to show up.  Weird.

When its not that big the handle does a great job.  Here is a demonstration:

1) Too big just dive bomb
2) Second wave comes at me.  Tail handle demonstration with wind blowing board back over wave
3) Holding the handle after a decent beating.  Get hit by follow on wave.  Handle and board act like 5X flotation device
4) Demonstration on a non-breaking wave to show the technique

Wow.  Great demonstration, thanks.  SUS really pay the price when caught inside compared to prone guys.  I guess it's payback for the other advantages of a SUP.

Where was that?  It looked liked Mavericks with the radar station in the background.

When you ask a question about big wave technique and get a video response from Mavericks, you can pretty much consider it answered.

Tail handles work, even if you're not sure they do. We're not speculating.

But be clear, anything in surfing can hurt or kill you, it's all a matter of what hits or pulls you where and how.

Thanks for the video Beasho. Remind me to not ask you if it's too big to go out. ;)

+1 on 1tuberider.  I'll add while doing the up and over,  roll the board on to the rail. You'll feel a lot less resistance.

My biggest way to avoid getting worked is not to attempt Mavericks.  ;) But I'm in awe of people who go out in stuff significantly smaller than that.

I agree on rolling to the rail.  I typically get up next to my board, hold the opposite rail and pull myself up just as the wave is coming. This sinks the opposite rail and puts the board at about a 45-60degree angle and it seems to slice through the mess a bit better.  If the force is too much, I'll just let go and I find it easier to do this from the rail without catching a finger or anything.  I completely buy what people are saying about tail handles, but I'm probably not going out in many conditions that would require them.
