We just had some rain on SoCal and more is expected.  It is recommended that we do not go in the ocean for 2 days after a rain because it is bacteria laden from the runoff.  I go anyway, do you?

No. I hate time outs. Southern Cal would be dysfunctional if they had our rain.

Living up north the runoff is clean enough to drink not that I would. Our source of water the Smith river is one of the cleanest in the nation. I love pure clean water.

Yes. Some of my best days have been with bacterial foam on the surface with beach closed signs. I ain't skeered.

kTake a good look at your body, especially legs, morning and night. Sometimes I spray on some antibacterial stuff from the drug store, or just was my feet and legs with dilute chlorine of hydrogen peroxide. Kills off the good and the bad, but Staph is not fun.

I stay out of the water a minimum of two days after a rain.  Way too many sinus infections due to contaminated water, not worth it for me.  I started doing this when I was prone surfing.  It has worked really well.

There were at least 4 paddlers in the harbor today.  That was my view from the entrance to the Auto Ferry.
With the forecast for lots of rain coming, I may stay out for a few days after it stops.

It's a right of passage, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Our local spot (1st and 2nd Beach in Newport Rhode Island) will often be closed for swimming after heavy rains, this never stops me and a bunch of other guys from heading out.

We often have to deal with really bad Red Tide during the summer which makes some people cringe. Nothing like being covered in a red algae full of micro-organisms and creepy crawling critters.

We really don't have the option, when surf is up, you go out regardless of water conditions.

Just try not to drink too much of the water during your session or you pay for it later.

I've gone both ways. I've surfed the Seal river jetty the day after a rain and it was gross the amount of detritus in the water which included animal carcasses was huge. Came out OK but don't want to roll the dice again.

Getting a little more specific about your/our area, the outlet from Talbert channel I've heard to be pretty bad and the Santa Ana river is actually better than the San Gabriel river in Seal. I might go up to the pier/cliffs or stay down near 36th for day or two.

One thing that I would take in to account is that it is the first real rain in quite a while that will flush out lots of crapola, more than average.

I thought the suggestion was to stay out for 72 hours?  ???

I never used to think about that stuff but I got sick after surfing in the rain while going through a seriously stressful divorce (that beeotch! :P). No doubt the stress compromised my immune system cuz I'm normally a super healthy human but ever since then I do tend to hold back a bit during and after rain storms. Its kind of a bummer too because I've had lots of memorable sessions that happened during storms.

I wear ear plugs and plug my nose with a "Sinus Saver" nose plug.  When I get out, I rinse out my ears with alcohol and my nose with saline.  I then go straight home and take a hot shower.  Hope that does the trick, would hate to get a staff infection as PB says.

Our sewage lines leak frequently into the bayous and we have 'no swimming' postings. I'll get a flatwater workout in anyways....but I'm opting lately to take my 14'r into the gulf and workout in the small surf/swell....its more fun anyways. The gulf seems to always be clean unless there's an oil spill or red tide bloom. Going to invest in ear plugs anyways.
